You're not trying to expand or contract anything.
Heat liquifies loctite.

Have you tried changing springs?
The stock Traxxas progressive rate springs leave a lot to be desired. I prefer linear rate springs.
Really depends how much you want to spend. Like Gripdog says...

That HR hardened steel spur WILL shred the pot metal pinions. Hardened steel pinions required as you suspect. If your running standardish power levels on 2s or 3s the stock pinion and plastic spur...

Brand new slipper shaft. Snapped my original. Now on my second replacement gear. I have a mate who does metal analysis for mining companies. Might get him to see if the old is harder than the new.

Just rounded out the centre of my second diff pinion. New gears are not as strong as old ones. 8yrs. out of original. No longer than 6mths. out of new stock.
