Even though the website says otherwise, it's just to show off. I lived in Dubai for a school year, and I can say that this is the kind of thing that happens when you give uneducated nomads huge amounts of money. IMO, Dubai is growing wayyyy too fast for its own good. I mean come on, they're even still governed by a monarchy!

That's going a bit far. Sure, one point is to show off, but it will also have some use. It will also serve to put Dubai more on the map, and draw people to the region. People in the region means money.

The people under the rulers (engineers, architects, businessmen, etc.) are educated, but the rulers... not so much. It's kind of like they don't know what to do with their money besides buy 40 Bentleys, a couple diamond-coated Mercedes AMG's, and some huge palaces covered in gold, so they try to attract more people to the place so they can make even more money!

England is a monarchy, and for such a tiny little island still has a very strong place in the World's ecnomic structure. I don't think that is a sign that they are antiquated. In fact England is still a major economic world power.

I think the whole idea behind this is to create jobs, and to show the world they are not a bunch of idiots.

One thing though, when the build is complete will there be enough business structure to fill all those empty offices with companies that can produce revenue?

The other thing that bothers me is it will also be a huge target for terrorists.

The Queen has the power to Veto any bill passed by Parliament, also has the power to revoke the Prime Minister's power, also can fire the Prime Minister as well and has the power to have the military engage in acts of war. Basically she does have the same powers as our president. Makes sense since our countries gov't is based on England's governemt.
But they do not, as you have pointed out, they see no reason to. Catagorically, the United Kingdom is still classified as a monarchy because the queen does have powers but just chooses not to exercise such power. Which is probably a wise move. Doesn't mean that the monarchy can't though.

They just modernized it a bit.

Well, it depends. The private school I attended (Choueifat Dubai) was said to be one of the best schools there, but it was nothing compared to how good the State College Area School District was back in Pennsylvania. It really depends on how much the students want to learn, and most of the people living there are immigrants.

Yeah, but for the most part, US kids have a lot better common sense than Dubai kids, from what I've seen.
