I got my slash a few days ago, and now I want to make a track for it. I mowed a field on the side of my house for a track but its full of grass. Whats the best way to kill it to get to the dirt? Thanks
This is what im trying to kill lol

Yeah roundup will be expensive for a large area. Just till the dirt up real good and then rake it out.

I did the rototiller and rake once before. Use the track often or you can expect lots of weeds and grasses to come back. If you do decide to go with a roundup type treatment expect at most once a month treatment, you Might get away with 2-3 a year depending on where you live. That or just hit it again with a rototiller and rake again. Have your buddies help as type of track fee![]()

You could pick up a pound of salt for pretty cheap and mix it in water...
We did this for SCCA Rallycross...

Agent Orange?? lol j/k Probably the best way is to till the ground or push off the top layer with a dozer. (Dont take off more than a couple inches or you'll end up with a pond!!)) Then, find the best weed and grass killer you can buy and apply that to the area.
Always expect the worst, that way you are never disappointed!

Yeah, I'm also making a track xD
I've searched many forums and stuff to find how to kill grass so thank you for makeing this thread
here's my track, and i'm going to use the salt boiling water trick![]()

Wow thanks for asking the question. Salt it is then I guess. I saw one answer was to sprinkle salt on and then water it. Well if you've got heavy rain on the way, you could save yourself some trouble.
EEMM...
Yeah that sounds like a way better deal...sprinkle the salt then water or rain...

Ortho Weed B Gone. About half the price of Round Up and just as good. I was a Round Up user until I found out about Weed B Gone.

Rock salt? Table salt? Ice melting salt? Or it doesnt matter?

heres what you do. you get a gallon of plain white vinegar and add a cup of table salt and a squirt of liquid dish soap and spray that on anything you want to die. make sure you spray on a day where its not going to rain for a couple days after and do NOT mix it with water, or it will not work. you can use as much vinegar as you want, but stay with the cup of salt and dish soap. works everytime

I used bleach, killed it quick, and you get super clean dirt, hahaha that wasnt funny was it.

I used a pull behind the lawnmower sprayer. Dollar store bleach, 3 gallons and 20 gallons of water mix. kept driving around the track till it was gone.. You dont need to go to that extreme though.![]()
Buy tar paper and put it about an inch or two under the dirt .
This will stop about 90% of weeds and grass from growing. I would normaly put rocks under the tar paper but it might get expensive . the tar paper will stop water from being absorbed into the soil and will stop most stuff from growing. I would also sugest finding a cheap source of rocks . You can buy bags of marble rock from home depot or lowes . However i'm sure u can find cheaper rocks some where. I'd put that under the tar paper. It will most likely cost you 50-100 bucks however its much better than buying gallons of weed killer and using the lawnmower and sprayer
GLJVD That would definitely be the ultimate way.![]()
i started making a track today at my farm, first i got paper and planned it then ( gravel so no weeds!)then i got the spray that you use for marking out on the ground and sprayed the track out, then i got the hose used to clean pools out with and pegged through it and into the ground and next weekend i'll just get a wheel barrow full of rocks dump it across and put sand and whala: ONE JUMP! LOL

I'd just keep driving on it, The advantage of driving on grass (shoter the better) is you'll get better grip than on dirt.
Not with a slash.Originally Posted by XR6-Maxx

my grandparents have a farm and they let me build a track on it, its not completed yet but we sprayed it with agricultural(sp) weed killer then when the grass was dead burnt it off
we then added some sandy dirt and rolled it flat, its pretty big and there are a few jumps so far
should be fun when my slash comes(hopefully wont get held up at customs... i cant wait)

yup it also stops sunlight from being absorbed lower than 1-2 inches.
its really the best way and pretty cheap when all is said and done
Salt is the best option for the price. You can purchase large bags of rock or pellet salt at home depot or lowes for fairly cheap. If using rock salt, apply with a spreader and water it in. Works every time. Just be cautious if there are wild hogs around. They will root up the ground for the salt content.!Originally Posted by PhotoPunk

If it's wet, sticky, and not yours..DONT TOUCH IT!
We struggle all summer with weeds and grass that want to grow on the track. I just bought a propane wand torch to be able to spot burn them off. I think it will be cheaper in the long run than Roundup but unsure if it will damage the roots. We used Roundup last time but it took a BUNCH of it and it didn't last long.

The fire idea is nice if you live in a humid or rainy location. Keep this in mind folks, it's really dry out west and the grass is that dry without any weed killer. Setting that stuff on fire can get out of control really quick. I know at least here in southern Colorado we've had a burn ban in effect for weeks now. I don't mean to be a downer, but if you don't know what you are doing, don't use fire as a means to clear an area for a track.
Oh I agree! I am not trying to kill a big area of grass, like starting from scratch, but just spot killing the weeds that have come up through the clay. Roundup works but the torch is instant. It is very dry here too and there is a state wide burn ban in effect. We sure don't need a fire!

gotta love farm kit lol
bear in mind putting down salt will make the land un plantable for a long time...
just cut it real short.... and roto it
we can rebuild it, we can make it faster, stronger
