It is true if you want to prevent over-discharging your Lipos.

You can plug in a LiPo without a low voltage detector and it will perform fine, but you will have no way to tell when you get down to 3 volts per cell or so.

You can find out about LVC and LVA choices by either using the search fuction, googling it, or reading the FAQs.

Running a LiPo down too low will destroy it, and possibly cause a fire.
