Question Restoring my old original Sledgehammer

Back in 1991 or 1992 I bought my first brand-new R/C vehicle, a Traxxas Sledgehammer kit. Until then all my RC cars were bought used... An original gold-pan Associated RC10, a Panda Gasser, and a Kyosho Optima Mid. I loved my Sledgehammer, but sadly I sold it all in the summer of 1993 to buy a full-scale car.

I jumped back into the hobby in 2007 with the purchase of a Traxxas Rustler, and I've been hooked ever since. As luck would have it, I found my original Sledgehammer at a friend's house. He bought it 3rd-hand off the guy I sold it to, and it had been sitting in a box for around 15 years. He was happy to give it back to me, and now I'm working to restore the beast to its former glory.

Sometime after I sold it, someone dyed the chassis & most parts black, so I have no hope for an all-original restoration. Like the rest of my stable, this is not going to be a shelf queen, but rather a fun driver. I've had it running, but I am missing some pieces, and I'm hoping for some help in locating them...

    Missing pieces:
    • #1827 Battery Hold Down Plate
    • #1886 Gear Cover
    • Rear lower shock mounts (unknown part#)
    • #1811 Body
    • #1878 Bumper guard

Does anyone here have any of those parts they'd be interested in selling, or know where I might find them?

    Well, let's see...

#1827 -> a piece of lexan or wood or metal with two holes...
#1811 -> eBay now, reproduction from TBG
    #1878 -> eBay now

And, you can find many other parts in white too on eBay now...

Other than the rear bumper guard those are some hard parts to find. I am also restoring some sledgehammers and have had nothing but trouble locating good parts. The bodies are almost unheard of to find original. But I ordered a TBG body myself.

I also need a battery hold down but will likely end up doing what daniel said and make one out of lexan till I can find a better option.

Ebay has some stuff for the sledge, but you'll likely end up buying a complete truck thats been used a bit to scavenge parts from. Theres a really nice one on there now all in pieces but mostly complete. I almost bought it myself... it would make a great donor truck.

I just ordered a body from TBG, hopefully the chrome bits will fit properly.

I figured I'd have to do something like that. Maybe I'll pick up a piece of thin carbon fiber and test out my dremel skills. lol

I'm still not having any luck finding the rear lower shock mounts. The truck was modified to run only 1 pair of rear shocks, and currently the shocks are mounted directly to the rear A-arms. I really don't have a lot of money to be throwing at this project, buying another truck for parts isn't in the budget.

I know you said a donor truck is out of the question. But if you change your mind... this one would make a REALLY good donor. Everything you need is there and they people selling it are really nice. I almost bought this one but had to back out due to the shipping charges to canada. In the US you can probably get it for a great price.

    sunrunner_pei is from Canada.

I do agree it is a great donor truck with plenty of parts. Shipping in the US, atleast to my area was still like $25.00.

Good point... did not see that. Hehe... almost missed a fellow Canadaian. I had the seller talked down to $20 for shipping. Btu they wanted $100 for the truck itself. Which is too much for a basket case with no body and certainly missing some parts. I think its worth around $60ish plus shipping for a total of $80. But I don't think they'd sell for that. The lady who's selling it said they got an offer from a local guy for $175... I told her to take that immediately.

Thanks so much for the helpful replies everyone! I'm still waiting for all my parts to arrive. Any chance one of you could scan their battery strap so I could use it as a template to make a new one?

hehehe I'm from Canada too. If she can get that much for it, I'd say she should sell it for that. But it's too much for me.

    No worries! Thanks for helping!

I just picked up a bumper guard off ebay. So with the exception of the gear cover, battery hold down, and most importantly, the rear shock mounts, the 'Hammer is just about complete. Now I just have to wait for all these parts to arrive! haha!

My repro body arrived from ebay, and opening the box I has happily surprised to see that he sent me two! I'm still on the hunt for the lower shock mounts though. I think I'm going to try to fabricate a battery strap from carbon fiber, my friend has some left over from his last project.

Are you still in need of a gear cover? I have an extra one. Do you need the chrome bits for the body? I have a spare set.

I don't need the chrome, but I do still need the gear cover. Sending you a PM.

Whoops, PM failed. "pavmentsurfer has exceeded their stored private messages quota and cannot accept further messages until they clear some space." Can you send me a PM once you're able?

It was white originally, but sometime over the last 20 years someone dyed most of the parts black. I'll try to get some photos in the next few days.
