I have used the eagle tree system with gps, but the amp rating on the eagle tree is really too low for the spartan, so stopped using it.

I now use a Qstarz gps that is designed for sports use rather than automobile use.

Garmin etrek or similar are used by lots of folks.

Edit: seal the gps in a zip lock Baggie to protect it in the event of a ditching.

I use etrek 30. one thing I learned on the weekend. do secure your gps. I fliped the boat and the lid came off. luckily the gps wasn't in the boat at the particular run. :

i use a cobra hand held gps its small and weighs little of nothing
