is the steel itself jet black or is it a coating over the gears


an how much are these things i need more dust colectors(not saying these parts are bad its that i got the aluminum in january and still havent installed them)

Cant tell yet,it appears to be a coating from the hardening but not sure...
They are not cheap .... But nothing in this obsession/addiction/hobby is it seems.

They are not for sale yet.. Just testing
Yes I have the aluminum diff cups.
If these work well ,haven't run them or installed them yet. Hopefully get time on the weekend,this pesky job thing keeps getting in the way....lol. There is talk of whether the pinion and other output gears will be needed.i haven't managed to break any of those ( other than the famous #5678 issue) when I first got mine 3 years ago or so. Many .....many miles on mine.I have worn more stuff out than broken things.this truck is amazingly durable.

Hey Jam any update. If you need time off for RC stuff you can always take a month off for maternity leave. I think most of our trucks would financially qualify as a baby anyway.

Got a short climb in today.Going out again tomorrow got some video editing now. So far worked perfect. Once my tqi returns to me rx8 time,see if it likes that ... Lol it broke a single tooth off of one spider before the hardened ones went in.it kept driving just the rear would not unlock so to speak

Update for those who would like to know.

the gears are out of steel, not coated but professionally hardened by
a German company. The black color is from the salt based hardening
process
- the special hardening method is the only way to harden the small gears
without making them too hard, normal hardening will cause them breaking
like glass
- the gears are not turned or molded, the are milled tooth by tooth, the
small ones need a longer manufacturing time than the big ones (ring
gear)
- I think that this hardened steel gears make only sense in non flexing
cups like the AL7075 ones

Great stuff but the stock traxxas diff can hold up to slow rock climbing, hills and the avarage. What the masses would like is more testing such as;
1 - how does it hold up in 2nd gear bashing around and climbing.
2 - how does it hold up to extra big tires with high torque servo in a high traction area ( where mine failed)
3 - How does it do in a high speed test run when one forgets to unlock the diffs.
4 - How does it handles hard acceleration from a stand still with a brushless system.

No these are not the ways the summit was intended to be driven but we are talking about reality.

Has they mentioned a price range? I am waiting to purchase the gears and the diff at the same time.

Mine ate,yes ate diffs at a alarming rate
With the stock system. I do run it in hard conditions and had big tires.
Tekin is back in may throw the crushers on again and give it a blast.
I went this far because I want it reliable.
Waiting for parts and rebuilding the diffs
Is not as much fun as running the truck
Changing axles and shafts on the trail is
Quick,easy and cheap.matter of minutes im back running
Going out today to give it some testing/Abuse

I just noticed that the gears are now showing up on their sit with more info, but are still not available.

Small set for 2 cups 79,00 EUR
- 2 x ring gears
- 4 x spider gears

Large set for 2 cups 119.00 EUR
- 2 x ring gears
- 4 x spider gears
- 6 x output gears

Well I ran them with the tekin and the dewalt.i should say captain Idiot ran them(idiot driver on purpose) putting some video together
Rock crushers and tekin not the best combo.diffs fine.... Some other parts maybe not so much....

got a question the kit the comes with the 6 output shafts are they just for the diff or is the two of them the pinion?

I assume ring, pinion, and spiders would work in E revo brushless?

They should work fine the only real difference is the locker output is longer other than that they are the same parts I believe

I read a post somewhere recently but can't find it again. Someone was heat treating all inner differential parts by heating till red and dropping in oil then reheating and quenching in water. This post claimed that stock parts would shatter or snap under moderate pressure but that treated parts were noted to bend instead of break and that much heavier pressure was needed to bend them. What do you think?
