    Motor too hot to touch

So I just got a new e-maxx and used the 20/68 gears as listed on the box for 4s lipos. I'm concerned with how hot the motor is though, esc and batters don't even feel warm but motor will get too hot to touch after 10-15mins or running. Does that mean it is undergeared? This was mostly off-road running with a couple high speeds down the street.

Traxxas page states "Larger pinion gear/smaller spur gear combinations are for high-speed running on hard, smooth surfaces only."

So I'm confused. If hot motor means undergeared then I need a larger pinion or smaller spur gear, but that's only for off-road?

Try a bigger spur or smaller pinion first.

I think you're fine but a temp guage would eliminate the guess work. A motor that's 150* is too hot to hold but can run at that temp all day.
Do you have the MMM/2200kv combo?

You should be able to run all day on 4s with that gear combo. A temp gun is a great investment .

I run my truck on 6s 30c 5000mah with no issues 20/54 for erevo and my mate runs the same batteries with stack 17/68 on his emaxx no issues with temps.

Hot motor + cool esc = under geared.
Cool motor + hot esc = over geared
    Everything warm just right..

Motor ~ 180/190*F maximum, ideally 140/160*F, temps can be 10* higher inside the motor
ESC ~ pretty much same temps / Fan comes on @ 150*F
    Lipo's ~ 140*F max, ideally 100/120*F
    Rock n Rolla !

    Yeah it's the MMM/2200kv. 2s 30c 8200mah SPC batteries.

I'm going to look into getting a temp gun

With that setup and those batteries, its definitely a gearing issue. A temp gun will help a lot. Also, make sure nothing is binding your axles or drivetrain.
