    reod12x2's mt pede build/project

hey guys been wanting to wright the title above for about a couple weeks now.but have been pushing it off becuase my pede is broken.

so with this being my first build.i dont know what exactly to say or what exactly to do
so with the saying her goes nothing

in this build/project there are to key things i am aiming at doing and 3-4 side projects involveing the pede
to start with the key projects.number one is going to be a 1/8 scale extended chassis made out of 1/2''thick 6065 grade aluminum.number two is a set or more of caster blocks either made out of aluminum or titanium
    featureing replaceable hing pin bushings.
then the side projects will consist of a couple how to's and what not...first off being water proofing a lipo battery.two soldering new leads into a xl-5 esc.three doing speed runs .four remaking the hitatan 14.4v .and five either something else that i come up with or building what i call the ''thing''
now to start the pics off with my mascot(thanks 87gn for the idea)

so with him out of the way lets finaly show you guys what my truck looks like
    and a slightly diffrent angle

so far this is it for now i might have the lipo water proofing project up either this weekend or next week

so just for the questions about what im running
    -radio shack enforcer 4x4 shell
    -proline trenchers premounted
    -6852x 4x4 pede drive shafts
    -traxxas wheelie bar
    -castle creations mmp
    -castle creations 3800kv 4pole motor
    -2s spc 6000mah lipo
-hyperion eos 720i net 3 ad charger
    -original xbox 360 psu
    -rpm front bumper (black)
-strc hinge pins and front axle carriers
    -geared at 23/83-48p

    this is all for today
    http://<a href="http://i1272.photobu... i got 42.5mph
does eny body know how to bring videos up from photo bucket?

    SWEET!!
Been wanting to see this for awile..

With build threads.. You just go with it
I saw you changed your gearing back to 23/83 or something

    Why ?

with 19/83 i felt it just wasnt giveing the speed or power i liked
with 23/83 it feels like it has more pep
with 25/83 the pinion never stayed on
but with 31/83 its just to much top end in a smaller area

now with the high gearing i havent had a temp problem.but then again it was probably -5c/41f below

oh forgot the carnage pics of the roll over vid

    i broke my shell

    long story
at the lhs i asked the guy to price check the lipo. becuase i didnt know how much it would be for him to get it in(this is all before the usps lipo rules)and things sorta got left at that about a month or so later the guy called me up saying the lipo was in.i didnt have the money at the time but about 2 months later i finaly got it. i think the guy wanted 62-72 buck or something its been quight some time

    again forgot
this is the plate or should i say bars of aluminum im working with in the coming weeks
    as a plate its 8 1/4''w x15 1/4''L x 1/2'' T or a ''bar'' 4 1/8'' wide

I can't wait to see the chassis reod. With it being 1/2 inch, were you planning on any weight savings thru the machining process? Maybe cnc out so the battery can lay a little lower? I guess even thought it's a slab now, it doesn't have to end up as a plate chassis? Staying tuned

j-rett ya my pede did the same thing. i was doing a sweping turn when the front tires lost there grove and smack into the curb
ripped the caster in half and made the kig pin into a prentzil......thats why the caster has the aluminum glued to it and thats why it ripped apart again

oaks- yes majorly im actualy quight surprised at the weight of the slab of aluminum
and with it being 1/2' thick i dont have to use eny shims for the front or rear

.....the front sits 1/16'' lower then the rear to meat up with the bulk
and the skid plates will have 1/8'' of aluminum above them
so it should work out pretty good

    water proofing a lipo pack

hey guys finaly compleated water proofing my lipo pack. least to say ive learned alot about liqued electrical tape

    so here we go

this is the stuff im useing

it says to desconect all power before applying but that is just to eliminaite a potential spark
4mins between coats and a total of 10hrs to fully cure

so the victum a spc 2s 6000mah lipo seems to be the most common battery around here atm.

to start it off take a knife or a blad screw driver and slide it around the seam ''note'' under each clip there is a small amount of glue holding the case together) like so

note not all pack but my pack had heavey wear inside

once that is done you will need to cut the wire exit wider for a couple reasons 1,allows wires to move easyer
2,space for the balence tab to come out easily 3, room for the connecter and 4, space for the brush to get in there

just to show some of the wear that was on the cells

    okay back on track
push the wires down like a so

    then pull the cells out

    next step
this is where the extra space comes in for the wire exit....balence plug first

    and then the battery connecter

    to be continued

    lipo water proofing

and here are the lipo cells

now to start with the liqued electrical tape
instructions say to diconect the power but since this is a battery its going to be inposible
this stuff is also flamable if there is a spark but in a well ventilated area and doing just one terminal at a time should be safe

this is the end of the battery where i will start the procese

coating 1 and 2 on negitive terminal note this requiers a wait time of 4 minutes between ply's and 10hrs to fully cure

    coatings 3 and 4
    #3
    #4

i will show you a pic of why im saying this but alow 10hrs to let this fully cure

    a diffrent view

okay after letting every thing fully cure time for reasembily first off with the battery connecter

    balence plug

this is optional ....before puting the cells back in the case put a dab on the top to prevent the cells from slideing back and for again

    lipo water proofing

then reasemble bascially revers to taking it apart

push all the way back in like so

okay i will continue this in the coming days
but for that picture of my mistake 1 not letting coats 1,2,3,4 cure and covering up the tape after the steps above. a little part beside the wire exit got melted/turned into rubber itself from the fumes trying to escape

    night

yes this is reod approved only if you take your time in letting the liqued tape cure first between the 3 key steps ((covering the battery end, pouring the tape in the case ,and putting the case back toghether))...wich i didnt do...and useing only enought to cover what you need...wich i didnt do.and thats why a little peice of the case melted/turn to rubber on me

if you take your time i will say this is aproved ..if your going to rush then just use enought dont go crazy on it and make sure you can give at least 20mins (longer the better)before going throught to the next key step

    waterproofing lipo continued

hey guys this is contiuned from a couple days ago

after the cells are in the case pour some liqued tape into the pack trying to get as much twords the opening as you can

let dry as much as possible

after so apply some tape to the bottum of the pack just enought to seal it off when you put the bottum case back on

together like a messy sandwitch dont worry it cuts off nicely when dry

    just touching up theexit wires

then take the hammer to it for the night for 10+hrs

next day time to clean up the sides
    this is before

    and after

so there we have it fully water proof

and another pic of what i did wrong

    and thats it

    i bring updates

hey guys been working on the 2 chassis and they are some what taking shape over the previously showed bars/slabs

so this is what they were like 1/2'' thick by 4'' wide by i think 14 1/2'' or 13 1/2'' long

in the last week ive rought end milled the front and rear down to mounting specs
    front

    rear

    side view of rear

so far its going alog good ..my thoughts/guess are that i should have the chassis done by the end of march to the first week of april.

now parts.....about a month or two on order
i have here a stock black chassis, black rpm front and rear slash 2wd skid plates
if nothing else i could always go black.....one color?

not without my red and gun metal aluminum!!

lol i didnt think these aluminum casters where so skinny

but that pretty much does it for now havent done much with the pede other then changeing the gearing down to 18/83,makeing a splash plate for the esc and wrighting my shell off.....oh well ever see the agitaitor by radio shack?...its the suped up looking green version to what i have for a shell

    oh kd van
im not sure where that robot is from i know its not from star wars...cant remember the name ummm they had a lego series out a couple years ago about robots versus humans taking place on a mountian that was split in half lol things they make for kids today.

hey guys just an update on the aluminum chassis i got the rear tab done(shock tower mounts to)
sept for drilling and threading the holes

and am milling out the chassis for the rear skid plate

i think i should have most of the rear done on the two chassis next week

oh and more incorprrations i want to incorpariat
-side drilled threaded holes for a tvp type roll cage
    -use rpm's skid plates
-be able to use either the stampede or slash steering setup

    well errrr i dont know

im planing on going with the pro line "lifted look"ford rapter body and just dont want to burn shell's so i was thinking if i had another set of body mounts holding the shell it would some how lengthen the shells life

but on the other hand im not on the boat for rocking just a roll cage during a bash

Hey reod, I just saw the thread so I'm catching up. That body is BEAT UP (in the first pics). You need a roll cage or a new lid.

Question on the lipo case in post #17: what did you do wrong? I can't tell what happened from the pic. Does that stuff melt the plastic?

hey O.G. have to talk about the chassis some...have a couple questions

ya it ended up melting the battery case....fumes trying to get out turning the plastice to a rubery state then when its done cureing the plastice goes back to its hard self

oh guys need a prefrence what looks better
traxxas black chrome all stars or proline black chrome desparados?

news changed gearing to 18/90 from 23/83 and for what ever reason it feal less torquey
might be getting in a rpm trans and slash 4x4 bell cranks

    bi weekly update

okay first off drilled out holes for the radio shack agitator shell and mounted it up ....looks alot better then the blue enforcer shell(both shells by radio shack)

used a 1/4'' drill bit fits and looks perfect...sadly as fast as i mounted the shell .was about as fast as it had taken me to break the shell right down the side.well showing off to the nitro belivers of the class how fast electric could go.....but the high light of the day was when one of my freinds did a compleate back flip and landed perfectly...going overly fast but definetly worth it

part 2 of the bi weekly update

worked on the chassis a little more. not happy on my progress of the chassis but then again i only have about 1hr a day to go at it in machining class

so here is what im working at right now the front 1 of 2 servo mounts

making the stampede location servo mount. it is going to be stock spec...no shims no lock nuts

since this is 1/2'' aluminum i can basicaly copy the chassis so i dont need to use eny shims or spacers to mount the chassis to the front bulk head or the skid plates and servo locations

now thes picture might be a little dark but it was the only was to get a pic with out the flash reflecting into the picture itself
    curent progress
    top

    and bottum

still alot of work to do to the chassis hopeing to finsih off the front end in the next 2 weeks and then on to the battery /main chassis area and to finsih it off drill/thread all the holes and take the buffing compuond to make it have a nice chrome finish...then after that scream for enought time to get the titanium caster blocks done....least i have 2 more machineing classes next year to finish them off

    part 3

i got the rpm transmission case in ...looks nice and all and i like it sept for the mesurements that rpm used
for the chassis fitment.on a slash chassis it fits good into the shock tower notch. then on a rustler chassis you kinda have to force it into the notch but it still fits good.then the stock stampede chassis there is no way your going to get it in unless you mod the chassis or transmission. not sure on the tolerances but it looks like they mesured off of the slash chassis and assumed that all 2wd chassis had the same tolerances
with some time i will try and get the messurments for the slash and stamped shock tower notches

now for the mounting holes the only way i found how to sorta fix this problem is to shave off a bit of the lowest mounting screw hole for the bumper mount alowing the transmission to slide up and mount properly

havent rilly done much other then mount up and shave the transmission
    heres some pics

and finaly puting my guy to work holding up the trans

decided to got with 2.8'' mashers mounted on 2.8'' black chrome trx rims(stock vxl)
and go with either the p-l true scale chevy shell or the p-l 1/8 for rapter

other then that i ran my pede throught some deep mud the other day and am in the process of cleaning her off so if all goes well the truck will be down untill i finish the chassis off....it will give me a brake from the pede chassis and let me spend some time on the mustang 1/16th chassis before i convert it to a slash for the race season.
i will still be doing updates every 2 weeks for the chassis and truck unless something big comes up in the event of a positive or a negitive... that remides me im getting my wisdom teeth out in 2 weeks time

thats it thats all for now

    bye

    bi weekly update.

hey guys not much to show sept for the chassis.

been getting it done painfully slow.but the last couple things i milled out on the chassis made the rear end go together just by friction

and a close up on the rear end... there wasnt eny m2.5 an m3 taps in the machine shop so i couldent get the rear all mounted up hopefully the teacher can get the taps in sometime soon.

for the rear portion of the chassis.. the center is cut down 1/16'' for the rpm skid plate
and the two side cuts on the center chassis are cut out to allow the skid plate to seat to the chassis at the stock spec's

gettting back to the servo mount got it almost all done sept for the taps and cuts for the servo''notch'' to sit flush on the chassis...here is the front on view

    and oppisite side

When do you think the chassis will be ready?

    part two

the servo will fit nice and good when all done

so here is a current chassis shot its come a long way from a bar of aluminum to something that looks engineered
    before

    currently

    things to do
-mount up slash style servo saver
    -drill and tap''thread'' all holes
-mill out sections for front slash rpm skidplate and stock pede skid plate
    -mill out battery area
-figure out what im doing for mounting the battery and electronics
    -sand an polish the chassis's
-relaxe for a couple minutes then get to work on t-i caster blocks lol

still looking rought for the finish...lol im still working on it but when done i will hit it up with some fine grit sand paper and polish it up with auto sol. then possibly look for a place to get it anodized black or dark red.

oh the rpm transmission. i messured the trans to the chassis. and the rpm transmission is .035'' to wide
and da da du da rpm isnt doing eny thing about it ....becuase they belive they fit

oh ya a couple hours till i get my wisdom teeth out!.....all 4. ha ha ha little chip munk

    bye guys till next time

to say i dont have much more to do.i have all the messurments i need now..an i know exactly what to do(sept for the battery mount). so now its just down to more layout and copying over to the seconed chassis and getting r done

cool project. Just wondering if you will mill out some holes to save a ton of weight? That thing must be heavy. Cant wait to see the finish, hope you score a good grade.

yup i still got to mill out a bit of the one side for the slash servo setup. but other then that where the battery is going in is only going to be about 3/16'' thick.so there is going to be alot of weight taken out.. and the corners are hopefully going to get cut at a angle for alittle more show.
cant wait to get back to work on the chassis's.......O.G. do you like what you see?

all 4 wisdom teeth are out and surpriseingly enough the only thing that hurts to bad is my jaw muscles atm
