I installed a brushless system in my 2wd pede today and before I did it, I split the tranny filled the diff with moly grease and swapped out all the gears for metal ones, ring gear included. On my first run it soumded like I stripped a gear inside the tranny the truck would barely move and I could hear the telltale sound of stripped gears. But when I split the tranny for the second time, all the gears look fine, no chips no nothing! I am at a loss. Has anyone expierienced this? I am out of ideas other than just replacing all the gears.

You sure you just didnt strip the spur gear?
Or the roll pin might have sheared off in the back of the top gear, on the slipper shaft.

I know it's not the spur gear it's brand new. I closely inpected all the gears. What's the roll pin you're talking about? The one that forces the slipper assembly to move? If so that one is still there and in tact. Is there another one somewhere in the tranny?

I'll bet a million bucks that's what it is!! When I took the gears out I noticed a gear was notched and there was nothing in the notch!! I didn't even give it a second though. I'll tear back into it when I get a chance. Now to trim a 1/10 scale body clip and make a pin. Lol

You happen to know the pt# on the shaft?

......3793......
You'll need to knock the old gear off the old shaft. Or just get a gear too, its cheap.

Who needs nitro, when you got LiPo?

I apreciate the help!! Just checked and I think the whole assembly is less than five bucks shipped. Ordered!

Total was 8.32$ not bad!

I have never broken one of these... Okay maybe one, but I think it was due to landing a jump while on the throttle. Some guys break them all the time.

I did start out with the slipper too tight. Probably had something to do with it! I was having a blast for about 5 minutes. Lol
Most of my other stuff is 4wd or 2wd with a long wheelbase. These little pede's with just the brushed setup are fun. The brushless is awesome!

The more I think about it, the more I think I never put the pin back in. I have had some wierd breaks on other rc's from having my slipper too tight though. Shredded a tranny gear in my merv one time. That was an unusual one!

Put the pin back in?
The pin was not designed to come out and it's almost impossible to take out. They are pressed in. I'm sure you sheered it off and you should check inside your tranny for the broken off ends of the pin before they end up caught in the gears.

I always run my slipper pretty tight, about 1/8 to 1/4 turn from full tight. Never looser.

I adjust my slipper till it slips just right. I dont limit myself to predetermined settings. Every truck is different. Each slipper needs its own setting, from truck to truck. One thing is for sure, a properly adjusted slipper will save your driveline parts...

I back mine off 1/2 turn Max. Works well for me. Never broken any drive line parts or twisted any half shafts like many here seem to do. I did break the pin in the output shaft once from repeatedly landing jumps with my finger on the trigger. That was years ago, now I know better.

I've broken that pin before
In my slash with my castle system when it was in there on 2s lipo
I couldn't figure it out for the longest time..
So it's good you diagnosed your problem fairly quickly with help from dave00bear![]()

i noticed you replced the gears in the trans but did you shim the gears?
that could be the cuase...the top gear could of been slideing back and forth in the absense of the shims cuaseing the pin to pop

I think it had shims? Each gear has a washer on either side between the gear and the bearing. Is that what your talking about?

Good idea reod...
Yes it sounds like your washers are in place. But it could have caused what you describe.

????? So take em out? It's real hard to tell if they're too tight.

I'll do that. I wanna get a couple packs through it this weekend if I can.

If you do pick up backups for those shims, there are different thicknesses. The thinnest ones traxxas makes are what comes stock.

I'm clueless as to shimming these gears, what's the common practice?
addicted much....
On both the top gear and idler gear, you use a thin shim on both sides. This is how they come on the stock truck...

Just look at the exploded view of the tranny, make sure the teflon washers are where they should be.
Thats it, I have rebuilt several of the magnums, and have put them back together by the "book", always with great results, No special shimming or guess work involved.
If need be the washers are part # 1985

Cool, I'm gonna buzz over to the lhs and see if they have those. I'll probably end up buying the shaft n stuff too, since I'm too impatient to wait for the ones I ordered online! Lol

Well, got it all fixed. The idler shaft was worn and the pin was snapped off on one side, flattened on the other, so the good half wouldn't sit in the notch on the idler gear. Got the new idler shaft installed and got to run my first pack through it. What a fun little truck. I have an erbe and embe and a bunch of other stuff. But this thing is the perfect fit for the way I like to bash. My motor was a little hot, so I have to gear up. Just gotta figure out if I wanna go bigger pinion or smaller spur. Thanks for all the help fellas!

if your motor is hot you need to gear down(smaller pinion /bigger spur)
summit /mustang /stampede-2s spc lipo
Nah, the motor is topping out at max rpm too quickly and not pulling enough amps to do it. I apreciate the input, but I have to kindly disagree.

I personally get a steel carter pinfron the hardware store, snip a piece, (you know you got the right one when it takes all you got on the bull nose cutters to cut through)drive it in place and done. This is the first change I make for my XL pede running a 2400 on 3s. I've got 3 cases set up this way and have lasted close to a year on them. Now its a fight to keep the spider gears from exploding or stripping lol.
