    Build or buy?

I've been in the hobby for about 5 years and am currently running a 2wd slash with a little bit of everything.

My father recently became really interested in the whole RC scene and wants to purchase a nice car.

He doesn't want something cheap. He was looking into the 4x4 ultimate but I have no experience with the 4x4 slash at all. I know the ultimate has a lot of aluminum parts and it sounds a lot nicer than a regular slash 4x4.

My question is. If you are going to spend that much on a factory car would you be better of starting from the ground up and installing the parts you want specifically? Or is the ultimate already good for the price?

i'd personally start with a "roller" or ebay'd chop shop one (new parts of course), and customize it as you/he goes. twinkering and building is 50% of the fun for me where as some people find the truck good as-is right out of the box.

I think its cheaper to buy a roller and then the electronics of you choice. Thats what i did with mine.

Exactly. I've had just as much fun building my 2wd up as I have driving it. I would much rather have something unique to the way I like to drive. Something I can say ive done. I'll have to start looking for a roller for him

Build, build, build. I've gone this route with a few Erevos, a emaxx and a XO-1. Far cheaper than buying a roller or complete setup. Maybe no the way to go for someone starting the hobby from scratch, but for you it sound like the right choice.

I have less than $100 into my erevo "roller"

Just go buy something used. Much better deal than rollers.

this gives you/him a chance to learn a ton about the 4x4 while researching parts and what/why you want something or the pros/cons of something else.

I would much rather build something of my choice than rather spend just as much on some thing I may/may not like.

    jenny's, gonitro and omni

be careful of parts that are specific to the LCG or the original (HCG) chassis like the motor mount and bulks. if it fits the 1/10 rally, then it will fit the LCG chassis.

Buy a roller and add the parts you want. Don't build from nothing, meaning don't buy EVERY part seperately. It gets expensive fast. And make sure to have a game plan, for example, I want to build a Slash MT. Or whatever kind of RC he wants. Having a clear idea of what he wants will make it a lot easier in long run.
