My son and I love to do technical crawling so Im looking to change out the stock gears.
To add torque I believe I just need to add more teeth to the spur or less on the pinion.
However I see the stock 1/10 parts (14T & 68T) are whats available as spares/replacements, with a bigger selection to add speed.
Any suggestions?
I do want to make this an easy setup. No cutting of chassis or tranny flip would be great.
Thanks in advance![]()
I run a 12t pinion 68 spur.A little finer low speed control.
Here we do mostly climbing/crawling.
5mm shaft 32 pitch I can't remember where i got mine.
Was a few years ago now.but eBay or if you have a shop near by try there.it wont be a traxxas as I don't think they make them in that tooth count
Sent using lipo power
Mountains cant stop me
they have tried
I have an 8T Robinson Racing pinion on mine. Crawling is no problem.
Have a part number for that pinion?
Whatever it is I just typed... could be wrong.
I have the stock 14t pinon using the 72t e-maxx classic gear. crawls nice and slow. the 72t spur needs a slight chassis mod but works well

Hey thanks for the input!!
Looks pretty easy just to swap out the pinion.
Im guessing that if I reduce a 14t pinion down to a 10t pinion I would get a top speed reduction of 25% and a 25% increase in torque?
I bought them quite a while back and don't have a part number. I don't even remember where I got them. Google search should turn them up. 8T is really slow but I like it.
1.5 Module is the only RRP type that has an 8-Tooth pinion. They fit 8mm shafts.
Hot Racing makes one:

Thanks for the link, K!

Please recognize that I'm not claiming it fits or works in the Summit.

Yeah... from the looks of it I would have to shorten my motor shaft at minimum for it to work. But, it may be worth it.

I made spacers out of 1/8" aluminum to move motor back and fit the pinion. Drill and dremel are all that is needed to make and shape them. The aluminum bar stock is available at most any hardware or home store. It took a little effort but was well worth it for the low speed crawling ability. Very solid mount and I've never had any noticeable flex from it. I have 3 1/8" spacers on mine for 3/8" total. You could use 3/8" thick aluminum if available but it would be a little more difficult to drill and shape the pieces.
Cool.....after adding a 11t pinion we have had lots of fun crawling. The speed is somewhere around 20% slower than stock.
Even with reduced speeds we have managed to break all of the steering servos, a high/low servo, plenty of A-arms, center drive shafts and blown diff bearings its time to get the speed down even further.
Im hoping I can just add a spur gear like you have suggested reod12x2
I think with the big summit speed will be its demise. Spending more time in the shop is no fun....
cant seem to find any 72 tooth...

ya it been a while since ive been working on the summit. but if you have a dermal and a exacto knife. fitting the 72t should be a breeze. you will also need to shave a smidge off of the transmission case since the gear has a small offset
here is that part # on the spur if you haven't found it....tra4472R

When I mounted my 4472R I did not have to shave anything off from the transmission. The spur does make contact with the gear cover, but it is very slight so I left the clearancing to the motion of the spur.
