    New Horizons

Has anyone else been following the New Horizons Spacecraft over the past decade? It just passed Pluto at 31000 MPH or 8.6 MILES PER SECOND!

I think the wild thing is it takes over 4 days for a radio transmission to be received. Considering a radio transmits at 300,000,000 meters per second....

Thank about it... It's truly amazing we can accomplish this, yet we can't even solve the simple cold.....

So how smart are we really? Makes me wonder sometimes.

well now the cold is a different animal entirely. You're talking about something that invades the nucleus of a cell and then uses the nucleus to tell the rest of the cell to make more virus until the cell bursts. By the time the nucleus knows that something is wrong the virus is already forcing it to make more viruses.
ANYWAY back on topic. Can you imagine just how difficult it would be to hit a target that small? Its a dwarf planet yes but it is 4.67 billion miles away. In wrote out form that is 4,670,000,000 miles. That satellite has more miles on it than probably all the Hondas currently running in the world combined (just an assumption no source). That's, as Scotty would say "like trying to hit a bullet with a smaller bullet, whilst wearing a blindfold, riding a horse."

4 hours 25 minutes is the one-way travel time for a radio signal from Pluto the Earth. not 4 days, but that is still a long time.

yes we actually have a show that explains why Pluto is a dwarf planet that we made before new horizons reach Pluto orbit we are adding additional facts about new horizons to it. We share the facts to any interested guests.

I thought that they found out pluto was acutally larger than they calculated. Is it a minimal amount of size difference?

From what I have read, its mass is what they expected, but there is more frozen water than expected, making it physically larger.

The Alley is here for just this type of discussion. Do you find what we have said about this topic to be nonsense, or the topic itself?

By nonsense I mean to anyone expecting to see all rc/traxxas related things, the. Alley is mostly semi- sometimes- nonsense. about other cool stuffs, like space and the final frontier.

Technically, New Horizons is a remote controlled vehicle.

Only instead of LiPos it has a nuclear reactor. Imagine only needing to recharge / refuel your RC car every 30 years....

    That would be awesome.
Could you imagine the threads that would come up on the forum, "So, I bought my RC 30 years ago, and now it is saying 'Low Reactor', who sells the best yellow cake uranium 238?"

Its all about the shielding. 20+ years deploying and working on nuclear powered submarines and I received less radiation than I would have if I was standing outside.

It comes with the new Traxxas TQ-10000 Transmitter. The range is excellent, if you have 4+ hours to wait.
