Thank you Dcuda! As I always do with a new motor, I did the foam mod to keep dirt and other contaminates out of the bearing. I am going to be running a 19 tooth pinion and a 50 tooth spur.

One thing that I love about the Slash 4x4 is how easy it is to install motors! I am already finished and when the heat goes down I will give it a proper test drive

El Sob special is its nick name. I have run this motor system for well over a year! It's been great until recently when I broke two motor shafts.

Matts dubbed it the "ElSob Special" in his thread and it stuck!

"I'm calling this one the "El Sob Special". This is his absolute favorite. Through his recommendation, it's the one I run."

Good luck ElSob, I have faith in it, I run three of them and have never had any issue besides front bearings ing the motors.
Pro Mod confirmed he too had replaced them with a much better bearing has has had trouble free 2400kv's since.
I believe he run a few of them as well but dont quote me on that.

She is ready to go for a good run! I rebuilt the rear differential, oiled the bearings, stretched the springs for optimal performance and rotated the tires! Tomorrow I will take her out and see what her new motor can do

Just an idea here but you should try to run it without the foam stuffed into the motor. Hasn't each one broke right after the bearing? And also don't you only run on pavement anyway? What's the point in the foam mod if you don't run in dirty conditions. That is my suggestion to start ruling out causes. I know it is probably very very minimal but that foam probably does create a little extra heat right at that spot with friction. How tight do you run your slipper? Could your motor shaft be the weak link since you have very grippy tires, strong axles, and stong differentials?

Some good thoughts there for sure. I was thinking about gears....ElSob weren't you running 20/50? Any possibility that big(diameter) 20t pinion is too much for the small shaft? Has anyone had shaft failures with a 18 or 19t gear? I'm running 18/54 on 3s without issue(so far) bashing hard in grass/dirt/asphalt. Just thinking out loud here as I really like my ElSob 2400kv and would like to keep it alive as long as possible!

Hi el sob sorry for asking (as it has probably been covered elsewhere) but what esc are you using to power that beast of a motor?

The foam isn't stuffed in the motor. It is a thin sheet that goes across the top. I put a liberal amount of oil on it. The last 2400 motor didn't have one. I was in Indianapolis when I installed it. My slipper is not too loose but not locked down. As in weak link, the first motor lasted more than a year. The second didn't last two months.

Ok foam doesn't seem to be the problem. Hopefully this one will give you another year of performance. That might be the life of them for you. Nothing will last forever. The second motor was a used one right?

I wonder if it would help at all to run a 1/8" to 5mm shaft adapter and then run 5mm bore pinions?

I run a HR pinion with an adapter for my El Sob special as all the pedes came with 3mm shaft before. I do not know if helps but I know I have nvr had a problem with it....

I have to be the odd man out again and say while I agree the motors are pushing a lot of power for a 3mm shaft I've never had an issue with any of my three, I'll add they get put thru the ringer as well.
I ran 5s thru one and that same motor runs fine to this day.
I have found the output shaft bearings get loose in a hurry and fine myself changing them more then I would on most other motors, (2200 and 2650 cc) you can hear them before they show any play.
While I think ceramic bearings are over kill in an rc, should I ever break a 2400 3mm shaft I will follow Pro Mod's idea and replace the output shaft bearings with ceramic.
It wouldn't take much for a bearing to start getting loose and let a piece of debris in between the pinion and spur
This has happened with much less powerful 540 can motors as well.
Then there is the outside chance a bad batch of hardened steal got past QC at castle, unlikely but not impossible.

That would be one requirement of running a camera! Hopefully the motor lasts a little longer this time.

I know your mod does a great job of keeping the dirt out, but perhaps for a while and being its a ten minute job, maybe pulling the motor and checking the front bearing every four or so packs might be worth the time.
Thats the motor I'm running in my sand build but am running a team associated slipper with pro-light 32p spur and RR hardened pinion

Nice run. I am thinking of getting ceramic bearings on my electric rigs , just put some on my revo and wow...just awsome feel, so smooth...well it feels that way....

Eh El Sob you may want to try the 2650 and 2200 to one day.
