    If it's 2 pole I would get a speed passion v3 sensored.
4 pole either tenshock 401v2 or castle

first off ,what are you trying to accomplish?

you can run a brushed motor on it also......

however, you will find, that usually going with a more aggressive than stock motor, that the stock esc should probably get replaced too......

Well this puts some serious limits on your choices, we can forget about anything with a name brand of known quality.
The new vxl wont run sensored motors but thats no big deal with your budget.
You might be able to find a tacon on something but $40 wont buy a lot of rc motor.
    Something like this maybe.

I bet it would run the 2400kv Kershaw. I can't see it being much different than running a 2400kv Castle off of it, which we all know works fine.

I'm with Matts on this. I have the 2700kv Kershaw and so far I'm liking it a lot! It actually feels a little snappier and smoother than the funny car 2400 I had and it has a 5mm shaft. Matts, Your link shows an ad for a 2400kv but a pic of the 2700kv?? Didn't even know they had a 2400kv? Good to know!! These are both quite a bit longer than the Velenion 3500 so some component relocation will be necessary. Anyway..here's a link to the 2700kv...it's $4 more.

If you look in the Q&A at the bottom... he recommends NOT to run the 2700kv with a stock ESC though.

I did read that but I wonder what his reasoning is? It's 300kv more than the 2400 but 800kv less than the 3500. If the vxl will run both of those why wouldn't it run a 2700kv? He says he has 120a esc for sale too but I thought the vxl was rated for that(and a little more)?? Just curious here.

I'm guessing it pulls more amps. Someone here tried a 3150kv Vanguard motor (550 sized) on a VXL and it was cutting out at high rpm. The reason the VXL 3500 works, even though the kv is higher is that it's a 540 sized motor. It takes a lot more amps to turn the longer rotor of the 550 over.

It (the 2700) might work... I don't know for sure. I'm just guessing. I think it'd be better to stay on the safe side and assume the 2400kv version pulls less amps.

Gotcha....makes sense. These Kershaws are both 4mm longer than the Traxxas/Castle 2400kv so.....I can see the 2400kv drawing a bit less than the 2700kv. Am I thinking right here? Don't mean to sidetrack the thread just trying to learn a little here.

I'm thinking that that is exaggerated a bit. If that were the case... you could drop in a Castle 2200kv Mamba Monster motor and call it good. I'll bet you a nickel it would burn it up.

Can Traxxas Funny Car be paired with stock esc?
Are there any limitions on kv? i take from all comments that it it possible to get 1/8 motor with vxl.
My limitation on battery (2s or 3s) comes from esc or motor?

I've heard of several fellas running the 2400kv castle (funny car motor) with the new vxl-3, this would be the one with visible capacitors.
They seem to be having good results.

I've done it..it works just fine. Runs OK on 2s but really comes alive on 3s. If you're gonna run a true 1/8 motor I'd probably look towards a different esc...something from Castle or Hobbywing. Limitations for 2s or 3s comes from both the motor and esc. I think the 2400kv funny car can see 4s but the vxl esc can't and my Hobbywing SC8 can.

Really for a couple hundred bucks the sidewinder 8th can't be beat, granted you are gonna need a couple hundred more in upgrades to support it, but mine has been relatively bulletproof. O.P. I know this is out of your budget, but could be a worthwhile future consideration.

My stock motor has had quite few fast red blinking lights. I didn't have heat gun at that time and ran high gear. Ran last time less then 5 minute and already reached 180F. I checked the mesh and other good points, everything seems to be in normal operating condition hence need new motor (my excuse at least).

2400kv will be a bit too much I think. I am going to look into neewer motor but can't find it around $20 yet.

I believe they are the knock off ( supposidly fake, off brand, not authorised ) castle motors that you see for sale on E bay from China suppliers tagged as Castle.
Please correct me if I am wrong

Could not find the Neewer 2400 motor mentioned, but found a Neewer 2300kV motor/ESC combo for $46.50.
    http://www.amazon.com/Neewer-Sensorl...rushless+motor

I would just bite the bullet and get the Traxxas ET-2400. If not that, I would get the Kershaw 2400kV.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Yes you can run a 2 pole sensored motor with the older esc.
One thing I really like about it, my wife's pede has that setup and I might put a 10.5 tekin gen 2 red line I have sitting around in it.
