I soaked some of my bearings in corrosion x, I've used it on my esc to make them water resistant and it works great!

    ViperX-Maxx (8S) build

Heard back from Tom at SPC Racing, he indicated that the drop that I was seeing is "very reasonable" at such a high amp load.

Speaking of failures, my slipper started to loosen up apparently.

Purchased the Kershaw Slipper spring set to help here: http://kershawdesigns.com/SlipperSpring.htm
I put the metal spur in from HR and have the Kershaw slipper setup. So far so good. Just hate the sound of a metal spur.

Haven't measured it but nothing concerning. We'll see when the weather gets hotter if that changes.

That's usually the next indication of the cells are overloaded. The only reason I mention is I had some "less reputable" lipos deliver 193A @ 3.5v... so I kind of set a benchmark there.

I have my castle 2028 on the way and decided to go with the leopard bl5 esc from kershaw. Gearing is going to be 39 / 46. Needed to be water proof in Fl.

Piles of great info. Thanks for putting it out here. Definitely answers alot of questions I had.

I love my BL5, but I believe the reason it's $70 cheaper than a Max5 is because it doesn't work with the Hobbywing program box and the firmware isn't upgradeable. However the HW program card does work with the BL5 and makes changing settings much easier that using the 'beep' method

Just got my BL5 in today alone with other stuff. Man, this is one beefy ESC! I'd gladly trade $70 off for losing firmware upgrade ability and having to use a basic form of programming. Maybe if I used this truck to race my view may have been different. Looking forward to getting this project done.

    ViperX-Maxx (8S) build

I've also queried Castle on what they consider 'safe' for the XLX.

The XL-2 and the XL-X, do they have a LED display. I powered up today, my XL-X works fine; forward, reverse, and neutral. I wanted to calibrate it for the heck of it, but I didn't see an LED display. I could hear all the tones, though.

I actually emailed castle with the same question:

The Mamba XL X does have the same 3 LEDs as all of our other surface ESCs. But the lights are mounted facing down and can be difficult to see when the ESC is mounted and if you are in bright light; they are located on the corner of the ESC where the positive (red) battery wire attaches to the board.

I have attached a picture showing the location of the LEDs on the XL X (I removed the plastic end cap so you could get a better idea of where they are located on the board).

Thanks BIG Tim. I would of never guessed that in a million years. It is kind of a silly spot for it, I think. I might just calibrate it by just using how it sounds. I hate the idea of having to take everything apart just for a simple calibration procedure. Anyway, thanks again.

If you are somewhere that is shaded, you can see the LED from the left side of the truck. If lights up the plastic housing. I agree that it is a very silly spot.

Vipe, after I read BIG Tim's response, I went down stairs to my basement and checked everything out again. Sure enough, you can see the LED's alright. I should be able to calibrate my ESC without taking anything apart, but I think it would be hard to get codes off of that LED setup in the future, though.

Got my Dusty Motor shroud. It's a bit tight around the waist (above the XLX) but still works. I will do some runs and watch the temps. They were pretty low to begin with so I'm not too concerned.

There's actually another XLX truck on one of the FB groups that doesn't look as tight, I asked if he did anything special.

Really? I really want a cover for snow runs so I'm hoping one will fit my truck. I run the Max5 variant and it sits higher than the XLX. Hopefully Dusty Motors makes a version with more room up top......or maybe I'll just have to come up with a solution myself.

Here is the response from Castle in regards to the Voltage drop. Sounds like they are not concerned about it at all.

    Nelson,

The more important thing to look at would be the ripple. Find the highest ripple point on your data log, put your mouse over the point where it’s at its highest, and then look at the “Voltage” reading at the bottom where it says “Mouse”. Take the ripple voltage, and divide it into the voltage where it says mouse. It should always be below 10%. The lower the better. If above 10% you will want to either add extra capacitors or use higher capacity/C rated batteries. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I’m happy to help.

Came with a solution to give me a little bit more room under the Dusty Motor shroud.

I purchased some 1.5" velcro straps (loops on one side, hooks on the other) and attached a strip along each side of the shroud. Sorry for the dark photos, you get the idea.

Good info. That puts me at 4.6% running the xlx/leopard 1340 on SPC 3s 6500mah 65c batteries. I'm going to calculate again running 8s.

And here is how it happened, nothing extreme at all. Most likely it was weakened by previous shenanigans and the way I landed was the final straw

Isn't it rumored that Traxxas has redesigned the shock shafts to no longer taper where they've been breaking? I'd love for this to be true, as that's been the only breakage issue I've had. Sure, I've broken other parts on it, but all those were really hard hits. A small impact in just the right spot can break a shock shaft on the X-Maxx. And they aren't cheap at around $7 each!

Hey viper how are you liking the xlx esc? I'm considering it over the hobby wing offerings because I'm more familiar with castle products, and there customer service has always been good to me. I would probably use this esc with the stock motor on 6s up until the stock motor gives up the ghost.

I quoted you, because that's exactly why I went with a Castle XLX-X for my Xmaxx. I can tell you that I really like mine, and my setup a lot. I'm running the Castle XLX ESC, Leopard 1400kv motor, 54/26 gearing, along with 6s power.

Yea I don't think I'm going to keep the stock radio, so I don't see spending 45$ for the bluetooth module just to be able to adjust brakes. But castle stuff has always been good to me. I just want more adjustability and room for expansion down the road. I like hobby wing products, just not the program cards or boxes. I like how simple castle link is.

no doubt. i've broken two shock shafts right there. i used summit pushrods while waiting for replacements. look what the summit pushrod did when i crashed trying the big double front flip over my 1:1 pickup, it bent instead of breaking...

traxxas: where are those TiN shock shafts at?

I like the Traxxas radio, and telemetry systems. I do think though, that Traxxas should of included the Bluetooth module, battery supply voltage, RPM's and MPH's with this truck. I corrected most of those situations with my truck except for the RPM's, and I'm pretty certain down the road I can correct that too.

I have a Futaba 4pksr that i use for my 5 race rigs. I was considering using that. The telemetry stuff is pretty useless to me.

Got-cha, I'm not a racer. I'm just a regular guy. I do enjoy the fun of the telemetry stuff, but also, I like setting temp limit alarms. For me, that is very practical side of telemetry, so I don't accidently blow an ESC or motor.
