It's not a license. What is required is registration with renewal every three (3) years.

Same here just registered my ATON. Dont know why people are up in the arms about this. Its not any different than having to register a full scale plane. Been there done that. When a hobby has taken on as fast as it has with the quad rotor market, it was a matter of time.

Register? Translate, digital data. DMV, FDA, DEA, DOJ, IRS, FAA, ETC... I believe I've been "registered" for 57 years now. And the benefit? You and your -car- are registered but that doesn't stop stupid people from killing in them every day. No, I'm not anti-rules per say, I just don't answer questions for no reason.

I think it's about accountability. A quad crashes into a stadium anywhere, they want to know who it belongs to. A quad crashes into your kid playing in your fenced in backyard. Who is responsible? Seems perfectly fine to me.

I think we should all reserve judgement until we see how things turn out. It might not be that bad. (Of course, that's what some thought when Archduke Ferdinand was assassinated.)
If you don't like the regs, there are some steps you can take to publicly comment on them. See the AMA's site to get the details.

FWIW, 18 days gone now and I still have not received my $5.00 refund.

Registered yesterday. Not really worried about the $5. If I get it back great, if not its a tiny fraction of a drop of what I spend on my hobby every year.
Our doubts are traitors, and make us lose the good we oft might win, by fearing to attempt.

There are some fighting back in the courtroom. You guys might find this interesting if you haven't seen it.

It's not the $ - it's the overwhelming evidence of poor planning, design, and implementation that concerns me.

Was at a conference a couple days ago with a rep from the FAA. The license is only necessary for "Commercial use". One of the rules for commercial is above 400' but he mentioned if that were the only rule you might be pushing, it's not required for you to have the license.

    FAA license?

We're not really talking about a license here, but sUAS registration.
Please see the latest AMA recommendation for their members which is to register their private, recreational aircraft of 250 g to 25 kg with the FAA:
