    My Xmaxx's TQi Mod

My Xmaxx has this new fangled TQi Link transmitter setup. It works really good, but what's a ReglarGuy to do with his iPod Touch when he's playing with his Xmaxx. It's transmitter doesn't have a docking base like my other transmitters.

I know it looks a little bulky, but it really feels really good in my hand, and it's a lot easier to look at the display on the fly than my bottom mounted iPod transmitters. Anyway, without the iPod mounted you can't feel any bracket weight at all due to the light weight materials I used. When you do mount the iPod, though, you can feel the slight amount of weight difference. But, as I said above. it actually feels better. I'll probably do my other Transmitters soon. If anyone is interested, let me know, and I'll take pictures as I do another one.

All I did was take one of my old Traxxas Docking Base's apart, and used only the mechanical iPod holder. Then I used the dense foam pads that Traxxas ships their CV drive (and other Traxxas parts) shafts with. I cut, and I put a pad between the iPod holder and the transmitter. And, I put another pad between the iPod holder and the iPod. The unit is screwed onto the top of the transmitter with two stainless steel wood screws. The pads are glued with contact cement.

That's the general jest, but there are somethings to look out for. I'll be doing a couple of more transmitters soon. One for my Emaxx, and one for my XO, so I'll take some step by step pictures. Also, before I updated my iPod to the latest Apple/Traxxas software update, I tried everything out with my iPad first. When everything worked with it, I went ahead and updated my iPod...everything works with it too.

I used an old case and some gopro parts.

One of the adhesive mounts goes on the phone case and another on the controller. Then I cobbled together some of the pivot links to make an arm that comes up over the controller. I had to do some cutting to get the gopro links to fit together since I had two surface mounts.

What if we swap the guts from the new style to the old style receivers?
I get why they went BT, but why did they get rid of the dock?!?!

I don't know why they did, but when they did, that's when I started thinking about how I'd mount one for use with my iPod. Half the fun of having telemetry is looking down at your display to check things out every now and again, so putting my iPod in my pocket wasn't an option for me. Most of the time the guys at Traxxas have pretty good ideas, but I don't care for the one that dumped the docking base. They should of not only kept it, but they should of also made one for the other phone.

I'm interested. I hate the new tqi not having a dock of some sort to hold my phone like the old one. I do like the Bluetooth connectivity though.

When they switched to the Bluetooth transmitter. Which is a blessing for many of us, because the docking base only worked for older Apple products.

i really liked the spot it mounted.. could have just left the dock off and kept mount.. that was a really good spot for the phone/ipod...

I believe so, and I think that's why they went with the link system. Also, having the display on top is so much more functionally better then the bottom...I was really surprised. Anyway, thanks for the positive feedback, and I will probably be doing another one of my Xmitters this weekend, so I'll take lots of pictures as I go.

I agree. I liked the dock very much to hold the phone.

    I cut and epoxied this

    http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...P?I=LXEXWA&P=8

to the blue tooth door on the back of the radio. Looks great, adjustable and even has a glare shield if you want to use it!

I was worried about it being sturdy but it's real solid even with my iPhone 6 Plus!

It looks higher in the pics, plus it's a big phone. You can lower it more to have the phone sit flush with the top of the radio if you wanted. I left the arm on because I didn't know how much adjustability I was going to want.

With it epoxied to the link you can unscrew it as one piece to move around on other link equipped radios. I'm imagine that was your whole line of thinking. Great idea, another one added to the list.

This is the one I bought. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B014GNF41G..._jbjIwb43F5J2V It has a 13" extension which is why I got it. Probably can finding something similar in one of the local shops.

Exactly. Plus it looks almost factory. No offense, just can't do zip ties and rubber bands, it's my ocd. If the arm was smooth it would blend in better. I also could have done a better job on the epoxy.

I was at my LHS today and everyone loved the mount.

Don't worry about it. It's your prototype, and the first one never turns out exactly perfect.

Can you still use the little battery pack from the old docking style remotes in the new Xmaxx transmitters? I like being able to plug it and not mess with finding little batteries all the time.
