I got mine Dec. 23 and when I got it out of the box I knew then I needed another one. Took me about a month and a half to save up for the one I got. I didn't want to start saving all over again and wait to buy another so this is the route I took. Good luck on your build when you get started.

I see more parts than I do build - someone is slacking! Whats the price tag looking like? About the same as new or a little less?

No slacking. Diffs have been dropped in as well as slipper assembly. My steering servo will be here Saturday. This last batch of parts ran 85 and add 52 for the servo. I will tally it all up in just a few and see where it stands.

I'm running knock-off brand 5th scale trenchers on mine. Looks a little weird at first since the tires are narrower, but the truck definitely handles high speed a-lot better.

Fronts are 195x75 and rears are 195x80. They are Rovan "Excavators" aka Proline Trenchers.

Do you use thermal paste between the motor and heat sink (aka metal fins)?

I know computers a lot better than RC trucks and you'd never, ever install a CPU heat sink without thermal paste. It doesn't look like Traxxas used anything at all. For high-end, overclocked gaming PCs, we lap the CPU (i.e. sanding flat using a piece of glass and wet/dry 1200-1600 grit sand paper) because the IHS (integrated heat sink) on CPUs are never perfectly flat. Flat IHS + flat heat sink + thermal paste = best contact area possible = best thermal dissipation possible and yes, it does make a noticeable difference in temps. Since you seem quite serious about this build, maybe this is something you'd like to try

Regardless, your project, thread and pics are awesome!! Kudos.

On my Stampede I tried using this thermal pad that I cut to size. The heatsink kept shifting around after large jumps. This helped it stay in place. http://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00UYTTXSM

I haven't tried this but if needed you can get thermal glue but be prepared for a one time use only if the motor were to die. http://smile.amazon.com/dp/B0009IQ1BU

On the X-Maxx I haven't had an issue with the heatsink and not using any thermal paste.

If ever, Arctic Silver 5 is the stuff to get. It's not adhesive, but it's an excellent thermal conductor paste.

Careful because it can get messy real quick

artic silver 5 will start to harden and then crack after time especially if the heatsink moves around. if you use that I would recommend using zip ties.

Oooh, good point! I never bashed my PCs with a baseball bat and didn't consider how that stuff would hold up under lots of vibrations and impacts.

Apologies. I didn't mean to hijack this thread. Back to you, gunbar223!

    Quick note
If you have ever purchased a bearing set for the tmaxx it will come in handy for the steering assembly. Part#5119 and #5116 are used

Does take a little patience. I let my daughter know last night that I was building it for her. She is pretty excited about it.

This is amazing! I'd love to do something similar, I have the patience to build it (being an amateur lego collector & builder) but I would not have the patience to wait for parts to come in

Tip of the hat to you and +1 for being a cool dad
