Smile X-Maxx On Board Audio - It's Alive!

I got the Traxxas OBA to work on my X-Maxx. I'm still using the 2ch transmitter as I probably wouldn't use the launch mode. I'm using a LIPO battery balance plug to power the unit while the unit is secured with double stick tape and a zip tie.

There are two sound units but one is wider than the other and the smaller one does not lay flat.

For the longer piece I installed it in the back window. I had to trim the flaps so that the unit could fit closer to the body but without touching it. I was also able to use the stock screw holes on the unit. I also had to cut the flap that the wire is wrapped around.

For the shorter piece I made two spacers since the audio unit does not lay flat. One side is higher than the other. These spacers fit on the X-Maxx crossbar.

Just remember that these units vibrate the body so you have to leave space in between the body and audio unit.

As for the screws I just used whatever I could find and later I will put washers when I get some.

Those OBA's are fun aren't they. I put one in my XO-1 last year, and I've had a ball with it. Anyway, if you want you can dump the extra battery, and tap power off of your ESC's BLACK and RED wire. Your OBA module will accept 22.1vdc.

I had an extra battery laying around. I'd rather use that to power my 5 sets of lights (I installed more since this video) and 2 30mm fans instead of draining my main battery.

Just for the sake of discussion, you don't need to do that. Your 30mm fans, LED's, and OBA don't pull any kind of current that you would ever notice a reduction in running time, or would have any kind of stress on your BEC. You would be better off with the weight reduction of one less battery, for sure. What you have now is like a person who normally uses standard commercial power for their home, but now wants to build a full sized electrical power plant just cause they want to add electricity to their garage. You can do it, but it's a lot of unnecessary overkill...just saying.

Oh cool. I figured I have a spare battery so why not use it. I'll change it around once my new motor/ESC arrives.

    hello
where did you get the oba unit,,not the speaker units, just the electronic module,
I tried to bye it from Traxxas but they don't sell it.I HAVE TO BYE A TRUCK THAT HAS ALREADY GOT IT INSTALLED.
and I just got a new XMAXX 3 weeks ago.
    thank you

For those out there that want to cool down the motor on your XMAXX,use a fan from a CPU and clip it on with tie wraps,
    it works fine.

You can buy each piece individually on eBay. Just type in Traxxas oba on the search.

Silly question, but does anyone know if the OBA module is waterproof? Just purchased two for my Traxxas kits and my kits do get played with when it's wet out.

I read that it is. I hope so because I already shot it down with water.

Thanks, that's good to know. I guess I'll just throw it in the truck and see how it goes.

I'd think it would be, being that the Slash is water resistant.

I redid the installation of the OBA module and turned it sideways and it fit perfect. It actually slides down over two nipples and the screws line up 100% like it was meant for it. Power for the module is now run from the receiver.

Heatsink on what? The module or the speaker parts?

You don't need a heat sink on any of your OBA components. They will run fine as is.

I installed one of these modules in my XMaxx to no avail. I guess it doesn't work with aftermarket radios :-( What happens when I power up the XMaxx is that the sound goes to full throttle while the radio is in the neutral position. Only way to get the module to go into idle mode is when the breaks are applied. I've tried everything and aside from slapping the stock radio in, I see no solution. There appears to be two program ports on the module when the case is removed but that stuff is beyond my abilities.

I couldn't tell you on that. I like, and use Traxxas radios on all my stuff...even my non Traxxas stuff. Their radios are reasonably priced, work well, and they have the nicest telemetry setup. I would like to see Traxxas developed their own telemetry display, though. That way, they could tell Apple to go take a hike. Not that I dislike my Apple products, but I would like to see Traxxas not have to depend on anyone but themselves for RCing goodness.

Just an update. I tried running two pairs of speakers to get it louder. It seems that the module cannot handle it. It will play it fine standing still but once you start moving and about 10 seconds later it will die. I bet if running it 12v from the battery it will be fine. Anyways I also noticed that the speaker mounted on the roof is not as loud as the windows. Adjusting the spacing did not matter as I think it will not vibrate that area enough. The back and front window are best. I bet the rear bed behind the latch would be a good place too.

You have to shave down the body support for the front window for the speakers to touch the body.

    Much louder

What I did to get the sound and volume I wanted was make polycarb tuning disks (it's kind of like doubling the bodies thickness), and silicone-ed them to my body.

You can just barely see them in this picture sticking out under my speakers.

Hi there sir,I hope you can help me.After ordering a OBA 28 days later I got it this morning.I tried installing it but I'm kinda lost, I'm familiar with electronics, but there is no diagram whatsoever with the unit.I connected blue plug to speaker, and b+ to a battery now i'm left with a green plug,a grey one and a bigger one that's black which seems to be built to receive onother one.Now on my receiver I got RPM space free,ch4,ch3,and a second ch1.if you can tell me where those plugs go in,I would very much appreciate.Im sending photo of the plugs, thank you so very much.

If you mouse over the top left of the pictures in Photobucket it will bring up a Share link. Click on it. Then Copy the link under IMG. Paste that link when you reply to the thread. You need to do that for every picture.
