Is this upgrade straightforward? I am going to go with the Traxxas 380 brushless motor/esc combo. Are there any other parts required for this upgrade?
If you have thw titan 12t brushed motor you will need the 380 motor mount as the titan 12t is a 550 can motor. Other than that it should be a direct switch.

Going from 380 brushed to 380 brushless will be a direct swap. No other parts (other than pinion) will need to be changed

What size pinion? Only using this Slash to bash. Might go to the Teton wheels/tires combo... might. I have seen a lot of Ebay esc/motor combos for half the price that are brushless and waterproof like the Traxxas brushless system. Are they any good; is the Traxxas stuff overpriced? I like the idea of an easy swap but money is money, something I don't have much of.
Going brushed 380 to vxl 380 brushless without changing tire size, you can safely go up 10-12t on the pinion. The brushed 380 mini revo stock gearing was 16/50, stock vxl gearing is 28/50.
Any brushless motor is "waterproof", it's the esc you need to worry about. Anything that can handle 50+ amps is fine. The only real advantage the traxxas esc is the chassis us made for it, so it mounts easily and solidly, anything else you will need to find a way to mount.

Thanks so much for the info. I will definitely go with the Traxxas motor, not decided on the ESC as I have read some negative reports on the 3M ESC. I do like the fact that it is a direct fit.
The traxxas esc is fine as long as you don't constantly overheat it by gearing too high. Keep it on 2 cells and gear it right and it's a great esc.
That said, the castle sidewinder sv3 is also a good esc, for about the same price new. If you can get a take off or used vxl esc for around $50 I would do that, otherwise, go castle.
That's just my opinion of course...

I wish Castle made a direct 1/16th setup. I have the Castle system in my 2wd Slash and really like it. With Tower running the 1/16th velineon system for $109 with a coupon code and Easy Pay, I may just go that route.

Trust: years to earn, seconds to break.
I had a slash brushed 550 converted it to a merv vxl and didnt touch the pinion or spur and run 3s 50-80c with a heat sink on the motor only never had a problem also when I converted to he 380 brushless I didnt know I needed a new motor mount plste and I didnt want to order one so I drilled it till it worked perfect
there is no 380 brushed motor.. well, not in anything traxxas uses
the brushed 1/16th use a 550 (36mm can) sized motor, not a 380 sized motor
The 1:16 brushed models originally had a Titan 380 motor, p/n 7075.

The Titan 380 was soon replaced with the Titan 12T, which required a different motor mount IIRC.

The 1/16th originally came with the 380 brushed then a little later was offered in the brush-less flavor. (the Slash 1/16th VXL) For whatever reason, Traxxas now only offers the 1/16th Slash with the 550.
For now, I think I will keep the stock setup and use up the NiMH batteries that came with the truck when I bought it.

Went ahead and bought the Traxxas Velineon system for the 1/16. It should be here tomorrow. Going to the LHS for a pinion upgrade tomorrow after work. Any suggestions? Just gonna bash with it.
