    TRX4 Suspension Flex (Pic)

LHS around the corner from work got their demo in!!
This thing looks sicc and now I really cant wait to get mine!!

Being a Trail/Scaler noob does this flex look good, bad, average?

I tried to find a common item to put under there we could all recognize. This is as much as I could get under there without lifting another tire. This is with no battery, bone stock weight.

Funny thing is I felt a little dirty in there looking knowing I had already pre-ordered from another LHS...Proof that your employees make the difference! I drive further to spend my money for that reason.

P.S. I am really glad I ordered the Red one...

This! There is a LHS 5 minutes away from my house that I have grown to detest 100% because of the staff. Heck when the LHS posted on their FB page that they had the display TRX-4 in, I stopped in and when I asked if they had a display model, the worker gave me a weird look and said "We have the box." That was it...he didn't speak up about taking pre-orders (I know the store is taking pre-orders) or anything. Glad I went completely out of my way to pre-order at another place.

Same here...there a rc shop 5 minutes from my house but the customer service is horrible...I go to the one closer to my job...They even took my number and they gave me a call 1 hr ago telling me the demo was there.

Its officially lhs demo day for sure. My lhs got one in today and I got to drive it for a minute. Really awesome, lots of torque in it too.

Remember, flex is overrated. This looks to have more than enough.

Overrated? Please explain... How much is needed and how much is too much, or is there such a thing as too much flex in suspension?

Yes, there is such a thing as too much flex! You really only need one tire height of flex. Too much flex makes for bad side hilling. Too much flex makes the vehicle want to rollover easier.

The Vaterra Ascender, for example, comes stock with too much flex. Most people put internal limiters in the shocks, which effectively limits travel, in order to make the truck perform better.

That looks to be about one tire height of flex to me. I thought it looked to have less in the videos.

I agree. It looks like a good amount of travel - not too much and not too little. Some people will complain about body rub, but that doesn't bother me. Real crawlers have body rub unless you chop the body.

Yes it will have body rub, especially up front with the steering at angle. I was checking that out.

    Yup!

Too much flex makes the suspension unstable, and will make the truck difficult to drive on a side-hill. This is a Class 2 scale rig, so it should look and act like something you could drive on the street, and still be able to do some good off roading.

It should be interesting to see how much TT this rig actually has. The LCC with its worm axles was supposed to completely eliminate TT, but still has it.

Wait until you drive the TRX-4. You will be amazed how sweet it is to drive without torque twist. Gotta love those portal axles!

Why? It's not like you're missing out on the hottest crawler of the year, or Traxxas's first groundbreaking scaler or anything.

Just drive down into Utah and I'll hook you up with a test drive on 2s or 3s.

There are, but none have gotten in this rig. Things move at a different pace up here, things are just a little bit slower. The natives are still getting used to electricity and indoor outhouses.

Any idea if any of your LHS's are going to get one in as a demo?

Nope. The owner of my LHS is annoyed at Traxxas right now for how they have changed their distribution chain, so it might be a while. I'll just order one off of Tower when they become available.

It drives good in the store. Bet its great out in the trails. Didn't notice any torque twist when everyone was driving it around the lhs. I think its worth the money.

while on the trail i did find the shock oil to be a little on the heavy side. it was bouncing a lot more than my axial with losi 30 weight oil. would anyone one else agree? anyone know the stock weight?

According to the TRx-4 manual, its 30wt on all four sides, stock.

If I'm not mistaken, if it's bouncy you want a heavier weight oil. Think about it, heavier oil slows the piston down as it moves through it. Effectively slowing the spring action down, both going up and down.

It also depends on what size the holes are in the pistons. The front shocks seems to react very slowly, so if the TRX4 that I fiddled with has 30wt in the shocks, the piston holes have to be tiny.

It does. But at a given piston size that is kept consistent (because I don't think he's interested in changing pistons when oil change is so easy) thicker oil will be less "bouncy".

Sorry guys, i meant the bounciness came off the tires because the suspension was stiff.

i got mine today so i will put 20 weight oil and see how it reacts to NYC pot holes.

Freakin great JEEP. Stock jeep wheels and stock Goodyear MTR tires!! And stock jeep bumper. I see you switched shocks, did you have to change the wheel base to fit the body?

Oh yeah! Wheelbase is now about 284mm. The only thing difficult about shortening the wheelbase is deciding what size links to use. I also had to cut down the center driveshaft on both sides.

What shocks and length are those?
Love the SWB. What other mods to achieve that articulation?

What mods would be needed to get more flex?
    Just change the shocks out?
