I donít see it holding up. His pulleys are close to 1:1 it looks. Very neat idea.

When does this type of setup have an advantage over normal gearing?

Belts are not as tough on gearing as they have some give typically.

How do they hold up with forward to reverse changes mid air during jumps?

If belts were a truly good idea for main RC drive components I think theyíd be standard issue. My 2 cents.

Not necessarily, because Bean Counters and Marketing have a lot to say about a final product too. Many times their wants trump engineering recomendations.

I wouldn't touch a belt driven RC with a 10 foot pole. My son had an HPI Sprint drift car and went through more belts than I can count. Can't imagine a small belt like that in the vids lasting very long with a truck that size.

The first vid looks interesting, but the second one the belt is a joke.

I don't run mine very hard, but the only thing I have broken on my 8s with 6s batteries has been the spur gear.

I disagree. My 22-4 has 2 belts and has so far lasted me 2 seasons of racing. But..... I also know guys with the same car that go through a belt every race night so what's the difference? Maintenance? Throttle control? Not sure

Gears over belts and chains any day. Timing belts snap and engines die. Timing chains stretch and engines die. Tough old engines with gears live for ever. Haha. That's my thoughts on why gears are better.

I've been talking to the guy for the past week or so. Mine should be here in the next week or so. I'll post up some videos and how well it holds up. I think with my style of driving it'll do just fine.

Care to share the ordering information. Also why are pinions needed for a belt drive. Are they just calling the motor belt hub a pinion. Iím also intrigued by this

Considering itís actually less than a spur and pinion, Iíd agree. Iíll post about it in my build thread. Itíll be a while. China to the US is a slow boat, and the belt is coming from somewhere in Europe.

I ordered a set on eBay where you pick a tooth count and wheelbase. Total came out to $12.00 with shipping.
The belt probably isnt strong enough for this application but it will help me learn what I do need as far as belt tooth counts etc.

This is it but please note that it will likely take some work to make it fit the truck. I bought it more as a finding information task and will likely upgrade all 3 pieces of the kit

Came across a pretty good how to video with links. The only thing I would disreguard is his spacer idea (just get an aftermarket adjustable motor mount)

After looking at this I think you were correct going with the 15mm belt / 16mm pulley.

[Again - video removed due to violations of Traxxas's Language policy!]
