    Question Monster Slash Gearing

Hi guys. I wanted to make my slash 4x4 VXL into a monster slash, can I put stampede 4x4 VXL gearing on it and would it work?

54/11 is also a good torquey set up that will keep temps down. I'm running 54/9 in mine

Ok. Can I use a 3s lipo or would I have to use a 2s?

I've never ran a VXL on 3s, but I hear they get extremely hot. I would stick to 2s and start with 54/13. Check your motor Temps every 3-5 minutes. If it doesn't get over 160į, you're good. If it does reach 160, drop down 1-2 teeth on the pinion and try again.

If you have a monster slash. I highly recommend saving up for a 1/8 scale engine and esc. It’s not to fun having to run 11/54 gearing and constantly checking temps. If money is an issue, just run the 11-13/54. Only reason I suggested getting the 1/8 scale set up, is the you won’t have to worry about the motor or esc heating up and you can run 18/54-20/50 gearing which is an absolute blast.

I burned up not with stock gearing on 3s. Just be careful with temps

yes if you don't run a heatsink and fan on the motor, 3s lipos sure do heat it up quick!
i'm running a double fan setup and it works great keeping the temp down.

I, like you, run a heatsink and fan on my motor as well as a fan on my ESC. They will run 20 degrees cooler because of it. Always recommended

I have a question. The Stampede 4x4 vxl and Slash 4x4 vxl use the same motor, so what makes it so that you can run the stampede on 2.8 wheels without the motor overheating?

54/13 stock gearing, and it's lighter truck.

I second this. Also, I’ve heard that trucks with a shorter wheelbase don’t heat up as much. Don’t know how true that is but it makes sense.

You can’t really put anything on it to make it lighter because putting something on it would make it heavier.i don’t think you can really make the car any lighter than it is. Hopefully someone can show a way on how to. But, if you want an overall lighter vehicle convert it to a stampede if the weight is an issue.

Do you want your truck to be really fast, or do you just want it to be fun?

Some guys like to do speed runs up and down the street, which I don't find very fun, and most guys will build ramps or find dirt piles to jump. To me that is more fun.
You don't need your truck to go 40mph to jump ramps and have fun. Mild gearing on 2s is sufficient.

I would agree with this. These cars jump far enough with stock gearing. They also go fast enough...especially on lipos

If Traxxas, then you would want to fit the E-Revo's 2200kV motor and ECS into your Slash.

If you do, remember you would have to beef up a lot of other supporting parts to handle all the additional forces exerted to and from your rig.

if I were to put the E-Revo motor, what else would I need to beef up beside the driveshafts?
I can't find anyone else who has done this to their slash

Center driveshaft, all four axles, slipper clutch, motor mount. Most guys end up dropping a 2200kv or 2650kv motor in. The e revo motor is a 2200 kv.

    Would this stuff work?

    Motor Mount - https://www.amazon.com/Traxxas-Blue-...ct_top?ie=UTF8

    Center Driveshaft - https://www.amazon.com/Tekno-RC-Cent...2032952&sr=8-1

Can't find what driveshafts to use, XO-1's are too expensive
How do I upgrade a slipper clutch?

Try a slipper eliminator, or the 6780 center differential. The XO-1 driveshafts are expensive, but they're also pretty bulletproof, and well worth the investment. Some folks on here swear by the MIP shafts, so you might look at those, as well.
I find your lack of teepee disturbing.

The center driveshaft is correct. The motor mount is not correct. If you have an lcg chassis for your slash, I recommend a kingz head or hot racing aluminum lcg motor mount. I prefer MIP X duty axles. You could get a center differential with an aluminum center diff case or you could get an e revo slipper for your slash 4x4 which is better for beginners and overall bashing IMO but a center diff will be fine once you get that aluminum case and figure out the best diff fluid for the from rear and center diff. I wouldn’t Recommend a slipper eliminator since it will put more stress on your diffs and slipper shaft.

    Thumbs down

    I have an HCG chassis.
Should I get a slipper clutch and center diff, or just on of them

I have an HCG chassis so that's why I picked that mount.
Should I get a center diff and e Revo slipper clutch or just the slipper clutch?
What do you recommend for diff fluid?

Here’s the motor mount to buy: https://www.amazon.com/Hot-Racing-SL...ws_feature_div

The center differential and slipper clutch are two completely different things . Since you’re a beginner get the slipper clutch .Heres the parts needed for that: https://www.amazon.com/Traxxas-5351-...o+slipp&sr=8-6

    https://www.amazon.com/Traxxas-Heavy...o+slipp&sr=8-9

    https://www.amazon.com/Traxxas-Blue-...2080741&sr=8-1

For diff fluid it depends on preference really. I prefer thicker fluid like 100k-500k. Some people like 10-30k.

What does thicker (100k) fluid do for the diffs vs thinner (let's say 30k)?

Short answer, thicker oil- better acceleration , thinner oil-faster corners.
