    Slash 4x4 slipper/pinion problem

I got a used slash 4x4 and decided to rebuild the diffs and throw on a new slipper assembly as well as clean everything. My issue now is it seems the slipper/pinion are binding and make a very loud clicking noise. With the motor not attched everything is smooth. I have tried to loosen the slipper completely and tighten it and I get the same outcome. The motor is also new. I tightened the slipper where I can barely move it by hand and reinstall it then the wheels are pretty much locked up. What am I missing here? Any input is appreciated.

If everything is fine when the motor isn't mounted, but it's "clicky" when the motor is mounted, sound like a poor mesh (pinion gear is too tight against the spur gear. In another thread, someone suggested using a piece of paper to set the mesh. If I remember correctly, you want to place the paper between the pinion & spur gears before tightening the motor into place.

If you can easily pull the paper out without the gears turning (turning with the paper-pulling speed, that is), then they area too far apart. If you can't pull the paper out, or it's difficult, then the gears area to close to each other. However, if you can park the paper out with gentle force, and the gears freely turn as the paper is being pulled out, then the mesh is correct.

I'll take a guess, and assume your gears area currently to close/tight.

Tried what you mentioned earlier and again after you mentioned with no luck. My last attempt for the night the pinion cracked on me haha. I am hoping that had to be part of it.

Not sure if this would help but I would also check the input shaft. My slash was clicking and it seems like it's the input shaft is bent slightly making the slipper clutch wobble. Ordered new parts and decided to upgrade the entire slipper clutch in the process.

I will look into that also. The slipper assembly is completely new.

How the oops did you crack your pinion?
And what did you replace the sour gear with? A steel one? If so the clicking is normal. But a cracking pinion is from a mesh too tight.

Just ordered a hardened pinion to replace it. Ordered the motor from fleabay and the pinion was already on it. Last time I pulled it off pieces crumbled so I'm not sure. When the new pinion arrives I will update. I can't say I ever had this much trouble with a mesh

The only time I had a pinion gear break on me was when I overtightened the grub screw on it.

Did you replace all the slipper components?

Since your Slash was purchased used, check the bearing adaptor, bearing and spur gear on the slipper shaft. The bearing could be shot, causing the adapter and/or spur gear to melt and wobble.

I appreciate all the replies guys. Looks like the problem was the pitch on the spur and pinion were different. When I got the correct pitch on the pinion that matched the spur gear all is well. I must have ordered the wrong one thinking it was something else lol.
