    Traxxas Rustler Brushless setup

Hello I have done a lot of research on here, but I have a brushless question for my rustler. I've been out of the loop for a while and currently had a mamba Max pro with a 3800 KV 4 poll castle creations motor. I went to use it the other day and the ESC failed on me and ended up smoking. I was looking to get a waterproof esc and came across the hobby wing sc8. I see that it's waterproof. That appears to be more in my budget compared to the mamba X. What is everyone's recommendations for a brushless motor set up for their rustler. Would the hobby wing Sc8 combined with the castle 3800 KV 4 pole motor be good combination with a 2c/3c lipo? I have a lot of upgrades to the car, rpm parts, big bore shocks,32p gears etc. I know this subject has been posted a lot as I have done a lot of reading. Thank you!

If you find that esc, buy it. I have one for my P4de. They’ve been discontinued, for something similar. They’re awesome. I think for your scenario something around an 3650 to 3660 can and 3-4kv will work well.

I’ve got Poseidon, leopard, and GoolRC. None have let me down. Hobbywing also makes nice motors. Poseidon for the Speed run Rustler, GoolRC is paired with the Hobbywing esc and is a beast. The leopard is for the X-Maxx.

First number diameter. Second length. So a 3650 is around a 540 can size. 3660 is around a 550 can.

The 3660 can will also have more torque than the 3650.
As mentioned above, something in 3000-4000kv range. Probably want below 3500kv if you plan on using 3S semi-regularly.

Also if you don't already have a temp gun get one to gear properly.

I have the same hobbywing sc8 ESC in my slash. It's great! Most of my trucks have hobbywing ESC's. I have a Hobbywing 3200kv motor in my Rustler. I think it's the perfect size motor for it. I can go 2s or 3s and not have to worry about smoking anything

I don't think those motors can handle 4S, but the ESC can. So be cautious about that.

The 3660 2600kv certainly can, spoken from experience

Don't see anybody talking about running 4s in this thread. If your referring to the motor pics there just for reference of motor sizes.

As Gripdog said the 3660 2600kv can handle 4s. The 3650 3100kv can run on 4s also but I would not advise to run it on 4s.

I was not aware if that. I thought none of the 3660 cans were 4S capable. I learn something daily!

Thanks for all the replies everyone! There's a guy selling a 2700 kv 4065 leopard motor near me, would that be a good motor to go with the hobbywing esc over the castle 3800 i currently have? Hes asking 40.00.
