    Racing Upgrades

    Hi All,

Thanks for your responses in advance. I'm joining a local race league after a 15yr hiatus and looking for some basic upgrades for my Rustler VXL 4x4. After reading some of the threads, the first upgrade I will be doing is the GTR Shocks. Race league limit is 2S Lipo & 8.4 volt max. I will also be switching the spur gear to the 17 pitch to have better low end control. I'm open to thoughts and opinions.

    Thanks

My o-pinion is that you should change that specific gear lol. On 2s a 15t pinion is good for track. On 8.4 (do not suggest) do like a 13 or 14t pinion. On the track, you want good acceleration, with a looser slipper clutch. Mine is setup like that and it accelerates really well.

    Welcome to the Traxxas forums!

Go to the track and see what wheels/tires the top racers there are running.

If your rig is purely for track racing, you may want to ditch the slipper unit and go with a center differential:

Also, tune your front/center/rear diffs and suspension.

    Test and repeat as necessary.

    Good luck and have fun!

I just posted this on another thread, but here it is again:

    Read here for more tips:

The thread is for the Slash 4x4 LCG, but most will apply to the Rustler 4x4 as well.

You'll probably have to switch to Slash wheels and SC tires, as nobody really makes race rubber for 2.8" wheels and 2.2" wheels won't fit on a Rustler 4x4.
