Never seen one of these gadgets. Looks like it would/could be useful for me. How do they attach? Magnetic?

I guess Traxxas made theirs specifically to have your phone on a stand to use with the Traxxas Link app. E.g. having it on the roof or trunk of the car while running your RC.
