    Xmaxx catches on fire

Just purchased my Xmaxx on 9/26/19 not even a month with it and it caught on fire after charging the batteries on a ez peak live charger.....mind you I had just came back from my local hobby store getting one of my batteries replaced due to getting puffy batteries have always been put in storage when I donít use for more that 3 days and always charged on balance....
As soon as I put my batteries in and have it throttle the truck caught fire and it went off after a few puffs I was not sure how to put it out as I panicked lol
I called traxxas right away to see how they would take care of this Iím really disappointed it didnít even reach a full month.....they sent me a shipping label and just had to buy a box big enough to fit the truck that code me $15 at ups and was told they will repair any damage they find on the truck and send it back within 2-3 days of inspecting it along with 2 new batteries....i donít know how I feel about getting the same truck repaired I wish they would just give me a new one and hope this never happens again has anyone had this problem before or how was your experience???

The truck arrives at their warehouse 10/29/19 letís see what they end up telling me

Definitely invest to get the hobbywing max6 esc to run with the stock motor your fires problems will be gone I suggest selling the stock esc batteries and charger and replacing them with better brands like

    Charger
    Venom pro duo
    Hota d6

    Batteries
    Smc racing
    Hobbystar

    Esc
    Hobbywing Max6
And max5 if you are going to upgrade the motor (not necessary the stock motor has no problems)
If you have any question another member may answer it

I might look into it but wasnít really trying to I donít want anything crazy the stock motor and ESC seemed powerful enough being the size the truck is on 8s I just donít want it to catch on fire ever again

I have always been into nitro rc over the electric but I had to have the Xmaxx

I bought a hitec rcx1 charger for my starter and receiver batteries
Not even a month old also but I shouldíve done the investment on a dual charger

Iíve heard good stuff on the castle creations 2028 havenít really looked into the hobby wing

As for batteries I have been looking at this new company with some decent reviews OVONIC

i really donít like the fact that the way the Xmaxx is setup it only allows traxxas batteries making it very limited on battery selections I know you can always get adapters but my local hobby stores donít have any nor would they be willing to change the plugs ofcourse so I can buy all traxxas batteries

Just buy some Traxxas Spartan battery straps, and mod your battery trays. Doing so, will allow you to use what ever battery and charger you want.

My grandsons xmaxx caught on fire last winter after we owned it for a few months. Traxxas had me send in the batteries, motor and ECS for testing. They ended up sending me a new ecs and a set of batteries. That seemed to fix it for now.

really well im glad they asked me to send the whole truck wouldnt have wanted to disassemble it and forgetting where everything goes
they said the batteries were too hazardous to send in and pics would be just fine

how has the truck been ever since the repair no more problems??

Truck has been fine since then I replaced the parts, and if you sent traxxas your truck I am sure it will run great when you get it back. I had a problem with the batteries and charger but the battery problem was my own fault and traxxas replaced the charger at no charge. Just last week the original steering servo died but cant complain about that, it lasted a long time.

I know how you feel about tearing into the truck to replace parts but the xmaxx is a really simple truck to work on. Traxxas did a great job designing it so anyone can work on it.

i was a bit iffy about also sending my charger just in case it messed up also but i didn't.
Since they didn't ask me to send batteries in and dispose of them i was told to discharge them thinking my charger wouldn't pick them up after the fire but surprisingly it did now im thinking if i can still use them or if i will just cause another fire doing that

If they were exposed to fire I would discharge then mmm in a bucket of salt water and let them sit in that for a few days. That will safely discharge them. And i wouldnít hook them up to my charger either. If you choose to do this, do not leave then mmm unattended!! JMHOís.

10/29/19 update traxxas received the truck today in the am and by about 12pm I had already received notification all fire damage was repaired and all firmware was updated wow that was quick! I am expecting it to arrive back by this Friday fingers crossed no more problems whatsoever having 2nd thoughts on upgrading motor and ESC or just the ESC

Id just upgrade the esc as it will not give much more power if any and you have great people on already interested in maybe purchasing the stock stuff

just the esc and batteries would be a good upgrade from stock I would also suggest using the same connectors that you current charger uses xt90 ec5 castle 6.5 etc just need the connectors around that size and capability

Thats what i was also thinking but now Im going to have 2 brand new traxxas batteries and i also got a 3rd battery i got a killer deal with a receipt so said why not since i realized i would need a 2nd pair of batteries and look into the 4th one as soon i got word on the truck repaired my charger has the xt60 plug which is a hitec rdx1 mini and obviously my ez peak live 12amp charger

both are like brand new i got the hitec just because my old charger from 2008 took a toll
im thinking of selling both chargers and buying either
    1) hitec x2 just because i like the cool feature of the app
    2) hota d6 nice charger for the cost and i think its cool that you can charge your smartphone lol
    3) venom pro duo i like the idea the fact that it has all sort of different battery adapters

My main concerns would be charging the lipo batteries, nitro receiver packs, and nimh batteries for my ez start

Ive considered buying a charger that has 4 ports but i think that would be too overkill for me

also anybody heard of these ovonic batteries they are supposed to be made by TATTU?

PRICE SEEMS SWEET!! AND IVE READ DECENT REVIEWS whats your guys opinion??

I always read these threads with some bemusement. I've only ever run my 8S X-Maxx on 6S and it has been an incredibly reliable and enjoyable truck.

I have had, and continue to have, countless Traxxas RCs and maintain the simple rule is always run your vehicle on less than they advertise - 3S capable? Run 2S. 6S? Run 4S. 8S? Run 6S. (I assume the new Maxx will run beautifully on 3S, given they advertise 4S).

    Get the d6 or venom
Iíve only heard good stuff about the ovonics but I would recommend hardcase lipos
Aswell as xt60 will not cut it for the xmaxx

you are completely right about that but i havent seen a 6s as powerful you do sacrifice a bit of power there
the whole reason i got this thing wa because of the massive torque it has on 8s!

    Same thing here too!

I do run Traxxas batteries and am completely happy with them. I had one bad battery and it was replaced ASAP at the LHS with no issues.

Yes, I don't even have any 4s batteries and no plans to get any.

I'm pretty happy with the performance as is on each vehicle. The one time I put max Battery in the Rustler it broke...same thing with the E-Revo. I stay one level down now and other than steering servos, everything is just fine.

I would have to test it out myself to see how I would like it performance wise myself i really like the way it pops wheelies on demand on the 8s

I’ve heard some negative things about the Xmaxx servo what’s the big deal with it?

Plastic gears - swap it out with the 2085x.

I use the Traxxas 4s batteries that came with my truck, hence run 8s. I've never had any problems at all [touch wood] but I probably don't bash as hard as some of you guys!

The amount of amps they can handle and can be a bottleneck for power. And we know bottlenecks create heat. XT90 would be better.

The xt 60 is rated for 60a
The xt90 is rated for 90a
The xt150 is the best option over all I forgot about this one

Many factors. Simply put for constant amps: Multiply the C rating by the mAh and divide by 1000.

they took care of you outside of warranty? my vxl-6s fire was the only time i ever called traxxas for help and they offered me none. i even sent them the video footage of it happening. did you have to ask for a supervisor or something?

No, I didn't have to speak to a supervisor or anything. They sent me a RMA and I sent the parts in. Traxxas has also replaced 2 tires, a set of batteries and a battery charger for me as well.

Do not use deans on an xmaxx. They are probably only 30 to 40 amp rated. Would melt and cause other issues. I'm not knocking deans, I use them in both my crawlers, nice and small, and crawlers don't pull the amps, so they work fine for them.

i run deans plugs on my 6s X-maxx, the vxl-6s did fail but i don't think it was related to the deans because my max6 has been rock solid since i got it. i can't speak to running them on an 8S x-maxx, but i've seen helicopter guys run 12S with deans bursting over 200amps. i went with deans because i've used them for so long that all of my stuff is wired for them. if i was starting fresh in the hobby i would go for something a little bigger.

    Charger
    Venom pro duo
    Hota d6

    Batteries
    Smc racing
    Hobbystar

    Esc
    Hobbywing Max6
And max5 if you are going to upgrade the motor (not necessary the stock motor has no problems)
