Diff binding in the diff housing

I’m building a new car.

After I put the front and rear differentials in the diff housing and tightened the screws snug, I noticed that the differential wasn’t free spinning in the diff housing.
It was binding somewhere, I couldn’t see where.

After loosening the screws a little (the screws that hold the diff housing and the shock tower), the binding was gone.
Is this normal ?

Tighten until the screws touch the plastic and then a little more for good measure. Any tighter and the plastic diff housings or bulkheads will deform.

also, something often overlooked is the screws that go into the bulkhead can actually go too far and hit the ring gear....

make sure they are absolutely the correct length, even a small 2mm difference can make it rub. 2mm is really easy to overlook

Even tightening the stock screws too tightly can affect the way the diff works. Been there and done that.

I believe I have experienced exactly what you are talking about. The two screws that attach the rear differential housing to the bulkhead. They are in the upper corners of the cover. With the rear bumper on the truck they are challenging to get to. On one of my trucks I have to keep them a little loose so the differential operates properly. This started after I installed the Stampede slipper clutch.
