Newbie needs help with X Maxx please - ESC/Receiver issue

Hi, I have an X Maxx that is about 12 months old, itís been running fine but today after I was using it normally I stopped to charge the batteries then when I went back I connected the batteries and normal but eh ESC would not power up. No LEDS at all on it or the receiver. I checked that there was voltage at the ESC and there was 24v. After about 1/2 hour trying to diagnose the issue smoke started coming out of the receiver. I disconnected the batteries and have left it alone. Does anyone know if the ESC has been damaged by the receiver or the other way around.

Any help or ideas will be much appreciated.

What voltage is coming out of the wires to plug into the receiver?

ESC probably took out the receiver. Call Traxxas.

    Could be
Try a different esc an a different receiver
If you try just a new receiver the esc might smoke it

Hi Double G. I had an online chat with Traxxas and they just basically said that the ESC is dead as there are no LEDs, they weren’t sure if the ESC caused the received to fail or the other way around,. BTW I’m in the UK.

Hi CrazyXMAXX, do you think the ESC is dead now then as there are no LEDs at all. It’s has voltage in.

    Yeah
If it had no lights when turning on- then the receiver smoked
The esc is most likely done
Usually the esc will flash all red lights when defective tho

    -power up/bind check servo

If no light on esc when powering on. There is probably a issue with the ecs.

And since it took out the RX I would bet more on a bad ecs. I'm not sure how one would test esc with a dmm.

Hi, thanks for all your replies, they have been very helpful. It’s a shame though that I need to replace parts on a truck that was £1000 after a short time. I would have thought the ESC should last a few years at least.

I understand how your feeling about it.

Do know there are many variables that can make a ecs have a shorter life span so hard to control and design for that.

The esc takes alot of amps and parts don't always like that...

One way to think of it is. Is getting a BMW turbo and adding extra boost and expecting to get 200,000 km out of it drag racing. Something is going to break alot sooner than expected.

I recently pulled all the electronics from my Xmaxx and got a Futaba PV3 radio and a Max6 esc. I also put metal gears in the stock servo.

    Very happy.

Getting ready to eBay my transmitter, receiver, and an 8S esc.

Hello all, I need some more expert advice please. I’ve got my X Maxx sort of fixed now, I’ve bought a new ESC and receiver. Everything works apart from the steering servo, is there a way to test the servo without removing it. Or do you think it was fried when the ESC failed. Thanks again for any help you can offer..

Do you have the servo wire in channel 1?

Does the car go forward and backward?

It is possible the servo was killed as well. Only way to test it is in a car either current one or a different one.

If car does not go forward and backwards you need to bind the tx and rx.

As mates says, put the servo in the first plug channel 1, the second plug must be free, and the ESC in plug channel 2.

Hello all, thanks for all your help. I now have my truck working again I’ve replaced the ESC, the Servo and the receiver but now after putting it back together it was running perfectly then all of a sudden it developed a loud clicking noise from the rear diff on full throttle. Anyone got any ideas? I’ve taken the rear diff out and taken it apart and it look fine...

Any help is gratefully received as always.

How are the rear drive cups. If they have started to chowder up. It may be from there.

If ran in dirt perhaps check center driveline for dirt.
