    Battery question

Hi guys, I'm kinda new to the hobby. I currently have a 4000 mAh Traxxas battery that started to swell. I've only had it since November. The warranty comes out to about $40 to replace it. I was looking at the SMC website, and found this: https://www.smc-racing.com/index.php...product_id=587

Is that a good battery to run? It's almost half the price of the Traxxas equivalent. Would it work with my ID charger? If not, any suggestions? Thanks!

    GTSDart340:
There are lots of folks here on the Traxxas Forums that have nothing but good things to say about SMC batteries. If I was going to move away from using the Traxxas ID battery system, I'd probably get something from SMC (although from their 'DV' series of batteries, not the 'Extreme Graphene' series that you linked).
The Traxxas EZ-Peak chargers should be able to charge that battery (once you expose the balance ports on the front of the charger), but you'll need to use Advance Mode... something that I have not played with. The instructions are all there in the manual (and also here on the website in the 'Support' section).

That said, for me the Traxxas ID system's "harder to screw up" method of charging holds a lot of value. Knowing that I can have my boy go charge the batteries and the biggest mistake that he can make is doing a 'fast charge' instead of a 'balance charge' is worth the extra cost. YMMV.

Let us know what you decide to do, and how it goes --BillJ

I've never tried SMC, but I do run Gens Ace 3s Lipo in my Merv. There's a balancing port hidden behind the Traxxas logo on the front, to the left of the ID input. I'm short, you can use your Traxxas ID charger for aftermarket batteries.
Here's a video showing how to do it. https://youtu.be/_PF1K4FoeTs

Do you think this is a better option? If course I will also get their low voltage detector to go with it.

It seems like a good deal to me. Half the price of a comprable Traxxas battery. 75c vs 25c discharge rate. It already has the Traxxas style plug on it.
Maybe someone who uses SMC will chime in about it, but it looks to be a good choice. I may order one myself.

My educated guess is that due to COVID the supply of batteries/raw materials has started to dry up a bit causing increases in prices. SMC doesn't have the selection they used to and their prices went up since I purchased from them a year ago. However, since SPC quit the battery business I switched to SMC and like the quality of their batteries.
