    Rustler

Newbie question. Is the Rustler 4x4 based off the Slash 4x4 platform?

In short, yes. The 4x4 versions of the Slash, Rustler, Stampede, and Rally, all share quite a few of the exact same parts. True, the Rusty's chassis pan is slightly shorter than the one used with the Slash/Stampede (I don't know about the Rally), but beyond that, you could easily convert one vehicle into the other.

As panther said, Rustl4r uses the shortened version of the Sl4sh chassis, more specifically the lcg one, shared with rally, fiesta, rally, etc

The Stampede 4x4 uses a shortened version of the Sl4sh hcg chassis, and is about an inch shorter than the Rustl4r.

Depends on what you want to do. There is no right or wrong answer.

I'm actually thinking about building myself one, lots of extra parts from the kids Sl4shes. So the Rustler 4x4 and Stampede 4x4 are different chassis?

So I know that the length of the Rustler 4x4 and the Sl4sh are different lengths, but are they the same design?

Basically, yes. The other major difference it's the way the body mounts. The Slash uses the typical clips, which allow for more body choices. The Rustler uses a clipless setup which limits body choices.

Fortunately for the Rustl4r since itís wheel base is close to the 2wd rustler and Sl4sh shock towers swap right in, one can relatively painlessly use a multitude of 2wd rustler bodies for it, something not possible with say Maxx.

I'm thinking about building a Rustler 4x4 with extra Slash 4x4 parts. Are there a lot of compatible parts between the different models?

Follow double_g’s advice and compare the two models’ exploded views, there are a lot of common parts but also a ton of model specific parts.

How durable is the Rustler? Is it comparable to a Sl4sh?

I don't have a Slash, but of all my cars the Rustler 4x4 VXL is only bested by the Maxx for durability.
That said, I always run one cell less than the maximum in all of my cars and don't have many problems with any of them sans steering servos on some of them.

The only thing I've broken on the Rusty is the shocks and an A-Arm and that was the ONE time I ran 3cells in it.

I don't have a Slash either, but I've been running 3s in my Rustler 4x4 from day one. I'm not easy on it, and I've only broken one axle and a rear hub carrier. I did replace the shocks as preventative maintenance, and also geared down the pinion, but it's otherwise untouched. I run it in grass and dirt, jump it constantly, and generally bash around.

Has anyone tried a Mamba Monster 2 esc in a Rustler 4x4? I just remembered I have one in another RC that's not being used.....
