If you are on a tight budget, you can go with a cheap ESC and motor combo. It's sometimes a hit and miss. But if you can, try to at least get an ESC from a reputable company (a $15 motor will work).
Everyday's a gift, thus now is called the present.

Just buy HW SC8. Its a really solid 120AMP ESC, you can program a lot of stuff on it and it costs 40-60usd on ebay. I loved mine, never got hot even on 3S with Castle 1512 motor. So for your aplication, I think it's gonna be more than enough. With that esc, you can choose any motor you like and as RCWilly said, a cheap motor will work. I run 17usd motor on my redcat and it runs sweet. Also, If I you're going down the cheap road, nothing wrong with that, but be sure to choose motors with 5mm shaft, 3.175 shafts tend to snap on these cheap motors Have fun!

The sc8 with a hobbystar 3670 should work well for 2S or 3S running.

One of these makes it easier to setup the esc or make adjustments:

I agree with the SC8. I've had one in my Slash for years. 2s,3s,4s on multiple motors from 3500kv to 2150kv 1/8th scale stuff. It has never flinched.

I can't find much other than sales pages with discontinued status on the SC8. I was wondering how it stacked up to the QUICRUN 10BL120 other than the waterproofness? They seem similar and waterproofing it myself looks to be a good way to save almost 40%.

Looks like the only real difference is the 10BL120 is only good for 2S-3S and the SC8 was good for 2S-4S.

The link Olds97 posted on Ebay has them and there's a few more on top of that page as well.
