Rustler won't work with lipo battery.

    Evening
I'm new to this new age rc cars

Got a rustler about a month it so go with the standard nimh battery.

Decided to buy a lipo battery but it won't work full in the car.

The steering works but the reverse and forward doesn't work.
I have tried it to the old battery and it works perfect.

Ive pushed all the buttons and held in everything but I can't get it to work.

Am I doing something simply wrong.

    Any help would be great.

What lipo battery did you get? 2s? 3s?

Did you switch the esc to lipo mode? You may be triggering over voltage if still in nimh mode.

Hold down the ez-set button on your ESC for 10 seconds. The light on the ESC will be green if it's in Lipo mode. Red for NiMH.

Yep. I was hoping you did too. Lots of good info in the manual...
I just now googled “switch vxl to lipo” and got the link to the manual...

That's your issue. The XL5 does not work with lipo batteries, and I don't think the brushed motor will either (could be wrong). So yeah you'll need a new ESC and motor.

You said it was a VXL model. That's the only reason I asked if you had it in lipo mode.
You can only run a 2s lipo with the XL-5/brushed motor. You still have to put the XL5 ESC in Lipo mode (Low voltage protection) to run the 2s.

I had the same issue with my 2wd rustler. I recalibrated the esc and transmitter several times and it started working. The xl-5 will work with a 2s lipo, but it does overheat the motor pretty quick, at least on the 2wd rustler. I was running 2s lipos in my xl-5 for almost a year, and the only issue I had was the motors eventually burning out.

Just FYI Texas is only six hours behind Ireland. If itís 7:30pm in Westmeath (or maybe Portaferry since you said Northern,) then itís 1:30pm in Dallas-Fort Worth.

Traxxas Support opens at 2:30pm your time.

The XL-5 that comes in the Rustler 4x4 is not designed nor rated for a 3s battery. (Only designed for a 2s LiPo)

The XL-5HV that comes in the TRX4 models are rated for a 3s battery.

If the OP had the VXL brushless setup (VXL-3s) that would also work with a 3s battery.
